Chris Hemsworth has voiced his need for a tone shift, which the Furiosa director could bring to the IP.
Marvel Studios has been rumored to be currently looking to get Thor 5 off the ground. Hemsworth has talked about how the film needs to take a distinct and separate direction from what audiences experience in Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, the latter of which has turned fans off of the franchise.
As rumors and leaks around Thor 5 pick up more steam, a slew of directors have expressed interest in directing the film, with Chris Hemsworth’s latest collaborator also throwing his hat into the ring. George Miller directed the MCU alum in Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, and is keen on working with the actor again, including Thor 5.
The director will have his fair share of Thor plots to adapt into the film, but there is one story that the director can do justice to, which will not only bring a great change of pace for the character but could also redeem a criminally butchered antagonist in the MCU
George Miller could do War of the Realms, redeem Malekith in the MCU
Thor: The Dark World actually had a great premise, but was bungled by a less-than-satisfactory execution, one that really hurt it in theatres and amount the general audiences. Malekith the Accursed is one of the more recognizable villains in Thor’s rogue’s gallery, sharing the privilege with the likes of Loki, Cull, and Surtr. However, the film failed to do him or his dark elf army justice, which caused the film to be panned by audiences and critics alike.
George Miller, speaking to Comicbook.com, expressed his interest in directing Thor 5, which would be Chris Hemsworth‘s fifth solo film in the MCU and an honor that no other hero has achieved in the franchise. He said: “I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He’s a wonderful actor. He’s got the full range of all the skills”
Malekith the Accursed would not be the first villain who was redeemed in the MCU, as a similar approach was taken with The Mandarin after the villain failed to wow audiences in Iron Man 3. Malekith could take a similar approach in Thor 5 and be redeemed as an actual threat.
Fans would love to see Geroge Miller make Thor 5
As the news hit the internet that Geroge Miller is interested in making Thor 5 with Chris Hemsworth, fans took to X to discuss what a grand idea this is, focusing on how Miller’s aesthetic would suit Hemsworth’s want for a new direction in Thor 5.
George Miller’s style of filmmaking could suit a tone change for Thor, which could be a slightly grittier film, but still retain the funny elements that made Ragnarok so great. Should Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios allow the director to make the creative choices that he needs to make it a good film, Thor 5 under the direction of George Miller could redeem the IP and make a case for more films for the character or his successor.
