“In those moments I’m not an actor”: Chris Evans Knew What Would Happen in Avengers: Endgame’s Final Battle But He Still Couldn’t Stop His Emotions While Watching It For the First Time

Chris Evans stopped being Captain America and became an awestruck fan during the premiere of Avengers: Endgame.

Thirteen years ago, Chris Evans became a key member of the Marvel franchise as Steve Rogers aka Captain America. From 2011, when he began his journey, to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the star has been a prominent and integral part of the MCU storyline while laughing all the way to the bank with hefty paydays.

Despite being a mainstay in the franchise for many years and having inside knowledge of all the twists and turns in the various narrative threads, The Gray Man actor confessed that he still got goosebumps when watching some of the iconic moments on screen. He revealed that one particular scene in Avengers: Endgame which he saw with a packed audience at the premiere, sent him on a roller coaster of emotions.

Chris Evans Will Never Forget This Moment At The Avengers: Endgame Premiere

The Avengers series have given audiences across the world many iconic scenes and moments to savor for a lifetime. While these segments have been designed to elicit these reactions from fans, the emotional gravitas of these moments were not lost on the Marvel actors as well. Chris Evans was one celebrity who was overcome with emotion during the premiere of Avengers: Endgame.

The charismatic star who brought Captain America to life in the MCU, has been one of the pivotal members of the narratives along with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. While it is obvious that Evans would have known the storylines and plots inside out, nothing could prepare him for the sensation he felt while watching the premiere of the film with a packed audience.

Elaborating on one particularly evergreen scene during the final battle that left him with massive goosebumps (via Marvel Facts), Evans described how this feeling of being one with the audience transcended any of the highs of being an actor.

When Cap lifts Mjölnir, our theater went absolutely berserk. Even though I knew the moment was coming, I still got emotional. In those moments I’m not an actor, or even an adult; I’m a little kid again completely captured by the power and magic that movies can wield.

The star went on to add that he appreciated these moments even more when he received viral clips from friends and family which showed viewers from across the world going completely crazy while watching this scene and many other ones as well. He realized then, that he would always be grateful for this amazing opportunity to be part of an industry that could entertain people in this manner.

How Captain America Became The Perfect 2nd Stint At Marvel For Chris Evans

Looking back, it is difficult to imagine Chris Evans as anyone but Captain America.  But as fans would know, the actor’s initial journey with the franchise came with his presence as Human Torch in The Fantastic Four. This existing contract almost ruined his opportunity to enter the MCU.

When casting considerations began for the role of Captain America in 2010, Kevin Feige stated (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the franchise was keen on casting only an American actor for obvious reasons. Evans who was considered in the initial list of probables, was not looked at further as he was already portraying a Marvel character in The Fantastic Four.

But as fate would have it, Feige and team were unable to zero in on the perfect match for Captain America despite a pretty impressive playing field of actors to chose from. Ultimately, Marvel circled back to Evans for the part. Feige commented on this journey with the Avengers star and his thought process leading up to finally casting him.

We thought, ‘OK, well, he’s that character, let’s keep looking’. And as we continued not finding people, we went back to the initial lists. And that brought us back to Chris. And I thought, ‘well, Patrick Stewart played Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier. Harrison Ford played Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Who cares?’

As William Shakespeare famously wrote, ‘all’s well that ends well’, and it surely did for Chris Evans, Kevin Feige, and Marvel Studios thanks to this wise decision that led to huge success for the franchise.

Avengers: Endgame is streaming on Disney+.
