“I will always be grateful to him”: Brian Cox’s Disparaging Comments About Marvel and DC Sounds Even More Pathetic After He Stood Up for a Disgraced Director

Brian Cox has a new criticism on Marvel and DC movies after he defended an X-Men director.

There are a lot of negative words thrown around superhero films these days and it definitely stings a lot, especially for avid fans of Marvel and DC, but Brian Cox is the perfect example of someone who cannot make up his mind.

Brian Cox Succession

The Scottish actor, known for his works on Succession and Manhunter, has a new tirade against comic book movies becoming the dominating force at the box office. He’s particularly not impressed with the state of cinema that influences our generation.

Brian Cox Slams Comic Book Films While Supporting An X-Men Director

Brian Cox has been very vocal about his aversion to superhero movies, but unlike Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, both veteran filmmakers who have firm deep-seated dislike for Marvel films, the 78-year-old Shakespearean actor has conflicting comments about it.

First, let’s focus on his new criticism of Deadpool & Wolverine. It is now one of the highest-grossing movies of the year after its $1 billion box office haul. While fans are celebrating, Cox is lamenting. “I think cinema is in a very bad way,” he said via Variety, pertaining to the popularity of comic book movies.

The actor believes it has lost its place because of the oversaturation of mainstream media, and while they churn a lot of profit, the work of actors becomes “diluted” – he even went as far as blasting Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, both actors who can do more but chose to “go down that road”.

Not everyone likes the same stuff – it’s all about preference after all, but at least be resolute. Cox is probably forgetting he was part of Bryan Singer’s X2, the sequel to the original Fox X-Men movie. He basically played the main antagonist there, and he surely loved the role because he told Yahoo Entertainment that he would “always be grateful to him because he had confidence in me and got me the role.”

Cox notably defended Singer after the latter was accused of being problematic on set resulting in a toxic work environment. He also faced numerous allegations of s*xual misconduct involving minors, but the Colonel William Stryker actor always had his back. “He’s an extraordinary director,” Cox would say.

Whatever happened to his love for the X2 film? He certainly thought there was “real allegory” used in it that served a divine purpose only for him to comment again twenty years later and say cinema is in very bad condition because Marvel and DC movies are all the rage.

Brian Cox Needs To Choose A Side

Cox is not the only one who has expressed distaste for superhero movies, but oftentimes, the people who do are the ones who actively avoid it.

He admitted often forgetting that his character was the one who made Wolverine, and whenever the X-Men film comes on television, he gets a little screen time there and complains he isn’t getting paid. For someone who hates Marvel movies, he is surely obsessed with his involvement in X2.

X2 is available to watch on Disney+ as of August 19, 2024.
