Adam Driver has had a very interesting career in the industry starting with her supporting roles in the 2010s. After his on-screen debut in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, the actor continued improving himself with his supporting performances in GirlsLincoln, Frances Ha, and Inside Lleywn Davis. The actor has now become a great leading man in dramas as well as blockbusters.

One of his most entertaining supporting roles was in the 2012 rom-com Gayby, where he played the role of Neil, the co-worker of Matthew Wilkas’s character. Neil is a comic book enthusiast, and he shares the sentiments of many Marvel fans who hated the infamous Spider-Man storyline One More Day and how it ruined many arcs up to that point.

The Hate For Spider-Man One More Day Is Echoed By Adam Driver’s Neil in Gayby

The One More Day storyline started with The Amazing Spider-Man #544

Spider-Man One More Day presented one of the most controversial Spider-Man storylines ever with fans heavily criticizing the events taking place in the comic issue. The comic book series written by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada followed the outcome of the Civil War storyline where Aunt May is shot and Peter Parker tries to save his aunt by any means possible.

Fans hate how Peter ends up striking a deal with Mephisto and chooses to save his aunt and sacrifices his marriage with MJ. The deal changed the entire timeline with the duo never marrying, which infuriated fans who believed they stripped away all of the narratives that led to their union (via CBR). Adam Driver shared this sentiment in the 2012 rom-com Gayby.

Driver’s character, Neil, in the film is a comic book nerd who works in a comic book store owned by Matthew Wilkas’s Matt. In one of the scenes, Neil criticizes the One More Day storyline which led him to stop reading Spider-Man comics and switch to X-Men. He also discusses similar circumstances of surprising twists in the X-Men stories which felt earned compared to the One More Day storyline. Neil says (via X),

I stopped reading Spider-Man ever since he made that deal with the devil. I am sticking to the X books. At least when Cyclops psychically cheated with Emma Frost on Jean Grey, who we all know is the love of his life, at least there was a little build-up. It didn’t happen overnight. And they didn’t need the devil to magically swoop in and say, ‘Oh suddenly you’re not…’

The scene itself is funny and reflective of the feelings that fans had of the particular Spider-Man storyline. Driver did an amazing job in the role and is among his most entertaining supporting roles early in his career.

Adam Driver Will Never Be Able to Revisit Marriage Story As It Hits Close to Home

Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson starred in the 2019 drama film Marriage Story directed by Noah Baumbach. The film detailed the deteriorating marriage of a couple played by the two actors which led to fiery divorce proceedings. The film’s heartbreaking story felt very personal for Driver whose parents also split up when he was a young kid.

Driver claimed that he wouldn’t be able to watch or revisit Marriage Story and some of the intense scenes of the film were very difficult to shoot for the actor. The actor states that it brought up all of the bad things of his past which was hard to let go of. Driver said (via The Wrap),

That movie in particular, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch. Those scenes in particular were really difficult to shoot because it just brings up all this s–t that you don’t solve at all by doing a scene.

Driver most recently starred in Michael Mann’s Ferrari opposite Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. The actor’s latest film is Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film premiered at Cannes (via Deadline) and received a 7-minute standing ovation.

The emotionally raw and heartbreaking film, Marriage Story, is available to stream on Netflix.
