“I shouldn’t pigeonhole myself”: Avengers: Endgame Star Says Yes to Joining James Gunn’s DCU in Any Role

One MCU star’s DCU entry becomes all the more clear after she expressed her desire to work with James Gunn again in any role.

Avengers: Endgame gave a bigger role to Nebula, who was just a minor character in James Gunn’s first MCU film, Guardians of the Galaxy. Actress Karen Gillan never thought she would get to do more than those first eight days playing Nebula in Gunn’s film. Nebula’s story completed a full circle in the final film in the trilogy, and Gillan reveals that she would work again with Gunn at the drop of a hat.

When asked if she would join The Suicide Squad director’s DCU, Gillan didn’t hesitate to respond with a yes. However, she shared that she didn’t want to pitch for any character in the DC universe. She was ready to take on any role that Gunn would ask of her.

Karen Gillan recently starred in Lisa Steen’s independent film Late Bloomers and spoke to Collider at length about her role. During the interview, she also touched upon her role as Nebula, working with James Gunn, and her future, particularly in the DCU with Gunn. Gillan shared that Gunn was one of her favorite people on the planet, and she would love to work with him again.

Gillan didn’t expect her character, Nebula, to appear in any films beyond Gunn’s first GoTG film. However, she went on to play the character in further movies and even had a crucial role in the Infinity Saga finale in Avengers: Endgame. She shared that Nebula’s backstory of being a scapegoated sibling made her emotionally invested in the character.

Now that Gillan is done with her Marvel role, she’s open to moving to the DC Studio, where Gunn currently serves as the co-CEO. She shared that she would say yes to the director at the drop of a hat. But she made it clear that she didn’t want to pigeonhole herself into a particular role. She felt that the director would choose the right character for her. She shared with Collider:

James Gunn is one of my favorite people on the planet, let alone filmmakers, so I would love to work with him again. Of course, I would, and I would do it at the drop of a hat. I also feel like I shouldn’t pigeonhole myself by trying to cast myself in a character. I think he knows better. So, if it ever happens, I feel like he’s gonna choose the right character for me.

Gillan added that Gunn is a natural leader. She felt that he knew what he exactly wanted in a film or a character and was incredibly decisive. She shared that the director has a really close-knit community, consisting of people who love

While she’s open to appearing in any role that Gunn asks of her, there is one role that has been attached to the actress for a very long time. It was rumored earlier that she was eyed for the role of Batman villain, Poison Ivy, who might make her debut in The Brave and the Bold. During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Gillan even opened up about one storyline that she would love to star in.

She revealed her eagerness to play the role during the interview. When asked about how she’d bring the character to the screen, she revealed that she would love to bring the romantic relationship between Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn to the screen. Gillan shared with ScreenRant: Oooh. That’s a good question. In a relationship with Harley Quinn sounds excellent.

It would be interesting to see this storyline play out in the live-action version. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn have appeared together in the animated Harley Quinn series. Fans would love this idea, but they’re yet to receive the details of these characters in Gunn’s DCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy and other Karen Gillan-starring MCU films are available for streaming on Disney+.
