‘I Loved Every Minute’: X-Men ’97 Star Enjoyed Rogue’s Love Triangle Storyline

Rogue and Magneto Xmen 97

Not everyone was on board with the love triangle storyline that was a big part of the first season of X-Men ’97. For Lenore Zann, however, it was something she absolutely loved.

Zann, who voiced Rogue in X-Men: The Animated Series and reprised her role for X-Men ’97, spoke about the controversial love triangle. While the relationship between Rogue and Magneto is derived from the comic books, this isn’t common knowledge amongst those who’ve never read them, and there were a lot of fans saying that X-Men ’97 did Gambit wrong with including the Magneto dynamic. Lann admits she enjoyed seeing the surprised reactions while sharing her honest thoughts on the storyline, per Collider.

Gambit sees a monstrous form of Rogue and Gambit in X-Men '97

“I mean, to be honest, when I first read it, I was like, ‘Oh, good. This is spicy! This is gonna be a little bit of spice to throw in with that sugar. I can have fun with this,’” Zann explained. “But there was a part of me that was like, ‘Oh, I wonder how the fans are gonna react?’ Because there are so many Rogue and Gambit fans, they call themselves Romy’s, and I’m like, ‘They’re not gonna be too happy about this. It’ll be interesting to see how they react.’ But as an actor, it’s always great to get those kinds of things because it gives you some more stuff that’s fun to play with.”

“I mean, to be honest, when I first read it, I was like, ‘Oh, good. This is spicy! This is gonna be a little bit of spice to throw in with that sugar. I can have fun with this.'”

Zann also wanted to offer some context for fans to think about, stressing how she longed to have physical contact with someone else. Either way, it was interesting for Zann to see the division that the storyline caused in the fan base.

Lenore Zann Understands Where Rogue Is Coming From

“Of course, you gotta understand where Rogue’s coming from,” she said. “When she’s in the dance club, and she’s watching everybody touching and moving their bodies and everything, and she’s like, ‘Yeah, I can never do that,’ I hoped that the audience would understand where she’s coming from. Many of them did, and then a lot of other ones were pissed off. But then people who are comic book lovers knew that it’s been in the comics, and they were correcting them online, going, ‘No, no, no. This has happened in the comics.’ In fact, in another universe, she has a child, she has a baby with Magneto!”

She added, “So, you know, what the hell? I think it’s great. I loved every minute of it.”

X-Men ’97 has a second season currently in development.
