Beau DeMayo’s magic will surely be missed in season two but his words have given us all high hopes for what to expect!
The first season of Beau DeMayo’s X-Men ’97 has successfully come to an end and throughout its run, the show was met with glowing reviews from both critics and fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, the animated series has an average score of 99% and an audience score of 94%. Clearly, X-Men ’97 was able to revive the superhero genre that has been slowly deteriorating lately.
Unfortunately, Beau DeMayo was fired from the show despite being the showrunner, head writer, and executive producer. This sent fans into a frenzy as they were worried about the future of the animated series. Fortunately, fans have nothing to worry about as Beau DeMayo has given them an update about his involvement in the show’s second season.
Beau DeMayo’s Involvement in X-Men ’97 Season 2
Back in March, The Hollywood Reporter revealed in an exclusive report that Beau DeMayo had been stripped of his titles on X-Men ’97 and was no longer a part of the project. The reason behind the firing remains unknown and neither Marvel nor DeMayo’s representatives gave any comment regarding the same.
Despite the fact that he’s no longer a part of the show, he takes the time to have conversations about X-Men ’97 with his fans on X.
When a fan asked him about how many seasons he had written for the show, DeMayo replied that he had actually written a lot for the second season. While this is great news for fans who love his writing, DeMayo also shared the unfortunate news that he will not be “heavily involved” in other areas of the show.
This includes production, design, music, and more. He will also not be doing any kind of production rewrites on the show. In the end, he added that since he is not heavily involved in season two, he cannot speak much about it but has “high hopes” for it.
DeMayo has worked with Marvel Studios on more occasions than one. He served as a writer on Moon Knight and is also a part of the team of MCU’s upcoming Blade film. Apart from that, he has also worked on The Witcher and its animated spin-off film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
Fans Want Beau DeMayo Back on the Steering Wheel
The fact that DeMayo has high hopes from season 2 and has written a lot of stuff for it is like cold water on a burn for his fans. This means that it is likely that X-Men ’97 season 2 will be as good as the first one if not more.
However, this is not enough to satisfy fans who are urging Marvel Studios to hire him back.
Take a look at what fans had to say about DeMayo’s update:
DeMayo is one of the biggest reasons behind the success of season one thanks to the fact that he, too, was a fan of the beloved mutants growing up. He told The Direct how X-Men: The Animated Series helped him understand himself and taught him how to navigate through the world.
I think just watching that cartoon every weekend, it united my passion for storytelling, definitely, and really helped me understand myself. [It] drew me to the comics, and then as I realized that I was gay, and as I even just got an understanding of what racism was.
I was growing up with white people who accepted black people, so like I never really understood racism as a thing until I got older. I was like a late bloomer. I will tell you, X-Men comics were probably my lifeline to understanding how to navigate [the world].
He then added that the X-Men helped him understand and come to terms with his identity.
Anyone who feels different, we all have a Magneto inside of us, and we all have a Charles Xavier. We all have a part of us that wants to burn it all down, and there’s a part of us who wants to find the compromise and build it up. And those comics really helped me understand my identity.
Clearly, DeMayo has a deep connection with the X-Men franchise and this was probably why he was able to pull off what he did with X-Men ’97. Should he return to his position on the animated series, the second season will be a guaranteed success, just like the first.
