The Deadpool & Wolverine trailers are missing one key detail that suggest Hugh Jackman’s mutant hero is continuing an unfortunate MCU trend.

One key element is missing in Deadpool & Wolverine, suggesting that the Phase 5 movie is repeating a common complaint about MCU superheroes. The easter-egg-filled Deadpool & Wolverine trailers reveal several pieces of information about the upcoming movie and establish the titular heroes’ conflict. Not only will Deadpool and Wolverine reunite 15 years after their first appearance together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but they will also be accompanied by many characters who hadn’t returned to live-action in a long time.

One of the most anticipated reveals of Deadpool & Wolverine was Hugh Jackman’s donning of the classic Wolverine suit. Months before Deadpool & Wolverine‘s July 2024 release, set photos shared by Hugh Jackman himself satisfied fans with a first glimpse at the long-awaited costume, and the trailers confirmed that Jackman will wear it throughout the film, even ripping off the sleeves for a more faithful look. However, Wolverine’s comic-accurate suit is lacking one major detail in the trailers despite the fact that it has been spotted by fans in other promotional material.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Seems To Ditch His Mask In Deadpool 3

Deadpool & Wolverine Trailers Suggest Hugh Jackman Will Barely Wear The Iconic Mask

Deadpool & Wolverine merchandise has revealed Hugh Jackman’s full Wolverine suit, including a comic-accurate helmet. However, neither trailer has featured a single shot of Wolverine wearing his famous mask. In the second Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, Wolverine is shown at the TVA, fighting Deadpool in the Void, teaming up with Deadpool at unknown locations, arriving at Cassandra Nova’s base, and jumping through a portal with Wade Wilson. Yet, Wolverine’s mask is absent in every single scene.

One common complaint about MCU superheroes is that they tend to remove their masks and helmets far too often. Nanotech-wearing and magic-wielding heroes like Ant-Man, Wasp, Star-Lord, Moon Knight, Captain Marvel, and Jane Foster remove their masks almost every time they talk. Even Spider-Man, who wears a more traditional costume, takes off his mask more often than a hero with a secret identity should. While being maskless allows the actors’ performances to shine, superheroes have very few in-universe reasons to remove their head protection and expose their real identities.

Thor takes this trend even further, only wearing his emblematic helmet for less than one minute’s worth of screentime across all of his nine MCU appearances.

Why Wolverine’s Mask Is So Important For Deadpool & Wolverine

It Took Hugh Jackman 24 Years To Finally Wear Wolverine’s Comic-Accurate Suit And Mask

Hugh Jackman now holds the record for the actor with the longest superhero role tenure, with nine live-action appearances across more than two decades. After twenty-four years of waiting, Hugh Jackman finally dons Wolverine’s classic suit and mask in Deadpool & WolverineHaving Wolverine ditch his mask almost as soon as he returns would be a disservice, both to the character and to devoted fans. The fact that Hugh Jackman’s new Wolverine variant provides a blank slate for his backstory and appearance also offers narrative opportunities that would go to waste if the mask is discarded.

While the Deadpool & Wolverine trailers suggest Wolverine’s mask will be absent for most of the movie’s runtime, there’s the possibility that many of the shots where Hugh Jackman appears have been replaced in order to save the mask reveal for later. Marvel Studios has employed this strategy before. For instance, trailers for Avengers: Endgame omitted certain characters in various shots, keeping Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye’s shocking physical changes a secret until the movie’s release.
