“How did we never do this?”: Hugh Jackman Had the Same Reaction as Us After Watching Himself in the Iconic Yellow Wolverine Suit

The actor spoke to Empire about what fans can expect from the mutants’ first venture into the MCU.

Hugh Jackman will be making his comeback as Wolverine in this year’s only MCU release, Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor last essayed the role in 2017’s Logan, which saw Wolverine die after being the last X-Man in a post-apocalyptic future. However, this time around, the portrayal is a little different, as Hugh Jackman will be essaying the role for the first time in a comic-accurate costume.

The comic-accurate costume was almost teased in 2013’s The Wolverine, in a deleted scene that did not make it in the final cut. However, the costume has finally made its way to the live-action space. Hugh Jackman sat down to talk with Empire about his experience with the costume, which might have been a tad bit too similar to what the fans experienced the first time they saw the costume.

X-Men (2000) had the mutants donning an edgier version of the X-Men costume, an all-black leather ensemble, more akin to a black ops suit rather than a superhero costume. Later installments in the X-Men series would continue the trend but would allow Wolverine to function in his civilian costume for his solo adventures. However, Deadpool & Wolverine marks the first time we will be seeing the character in a comic-accurate costume in the live-action space

Hugh Jackman, speaking with Empire, opened up about how he felt about the costume he would appear in in the film, talking about his thoughts on the costume the first time he wore it. The Greatest Showman alum said:

“We almost did it in The Wolverine. But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, ‘That’s him.’”

Audiences are very excited to see this version of the Wolverine on screen since it not only marks Jackman’s return to the character but could also introduce his successor in the story. Given that Jackman has stated that Wolverine might not be a gig that his body is equipped to handle anymore, it is very likely that Deadpool & Wolverine will introduce us to the Wolverine actor who will carry the role forward into the MCU for the next few phases.

Deadpool & Wolverine

Fans have a lot of things to be excited about in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Jackman has given them more reason to be hyped about the film. Jackman has stated that the Wolverine that audiences will see in the film would be quite different than the ones we have seen in the past. He said:

“There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me.”

The Wolverine that we will see in the MCU would be a different one. not necessarily the same Wolverine who went through all the shenanigans of the Fox-verse, this Wolverine will find himself in a situation that we have seen a lot of Wolverines be; in being the sole survivor of the mutant race (or at least the X-Men) in the wake of some sort of mutant apocalypse.

Jackman’s return to the screen is something that audiences are very excited about, and it must be noted that this could possibly be the last time the actor plays this role, maybe for good. This outing as Wolverine could see Hugh Jackman personally hand down the torch to the next actor to take up the role for the next few years, joining the X-Men in the MCU.
