“How did Scarlett Johansson not win an Oscar for this”: Scarlett Johansson’s Movie That Has a Higher Rating Than Avengers: Endgame Should’ve Won Her First Oscar

Scarlett Johansson’s double Oscar nomination in 2019 and Avengers: Endgame appearance was still not enough to win her the coveted award.

2019 was a great year for Scarlett Johansson. Apart from being part of the phenomenal Avengers: Endgame, which was the highest-grossing film of all time for a while, she received her first and second Oscar nominations. The actress headlined Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama Marriage Story, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

While the same year she also got the nod for Best Supporting Actress in Jojo Rabbit, her performance as Nicole Barber, an actress going through a divorce, has many wondering how she missed the win. The film also starred Adam Driver, who was nominated for Best Actor, and Laura Dern, who beat Johansson for Best Supporting Actress.

Scarlett Johansson’s Marriage Story Should Have Won Her An Oscar

Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Endgame

Scarlett Johansson hit it big in 2019. Not only was she a part of the highest-grossing film (for a while) Avengers: Endgame but she also received not one, but two Oscar nominations. Her role in Jojo Rabbit as the protagonist’s mother garnered her a Best Supporting Actress nomination while her leading role in Marriage Story got her another nod.

Endgame may have garnered all the attention that year, with fans not happy with the way the film treated Black Widow’s death, but Johansson’s Marriage Story received a higher rating from critics. With a one percent difference between the two, Johansson clearly had better scope to perform in Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama.

Scarlett Johansson as Nicole Barber

Many fans have spoken about how Johansson was snubbed that year at the Oscars. Despite being nominated twice, she went home empty-handed, with her Marriage Story co-star Laura Dern beating her for Best Supporting Actress. Fans said (via Reddit),

Just watched Marriage Story and how did Scarlet Johansson not win an Oscar for this?!

-MrBoxOffice007

Very weird looking back Laura Dern is the one performance that won an Oscar for the movie. Good performance, but I never think of her when I think about the movie.

Because how do you beat such an iconic performance like Zellwegger in Judy /s. No, the academy f*cked up

The Oscars seem to shortchange her for whatever reason. She was nommed twice for roles that were expected to get noms, but she also had a number of snubs, notably for Lost in Translation, which seemed to get nommed in most other major categories.

Many seemed to be annoyed at Renée Zellweger receiving the award for her performance as Judy Garland in Judy, which has not been as iconic as Marriage Story.

Scarlett Johansson Used Her Painful Divorce For Her Performance In Marriage Story

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver

Noah Baumbach’s romantic drama Marriage Story chronicles the painful divorce proceedings of a playwright, played by Adam Driver, and an actress, played by Scarlett Johansson. The filmmaker reportedly based the story on his own experiences while going through a divorce with actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, and his parents’ (via Deadline).

Johansson too reportedly based her performance on her own divorce with Romain Dauriac. She told Variety that when she met Baumbach for the film, she was going through a divorce and that she began ranting about it even before knowing what the story was. She said,

I was actually going through a divorce. I didn’t know what we were going to talk about….I just kind of blew into the room, ordered a glass of white wine, and started complaining” about the relationship she was in. And he was just listening and very attentive. And then he kind of cut it short and said, ‘Funny you should mention it.’

Johansson also mentioned that she related to many parts of her character Nicole, being an actress and feeling insecure about her talents.

Marriage Story is currently streaming on Netflix.
