“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,” the Duchess of Sussex said.

With the news President Joe Biden is dropping out of the 2024 election and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, it’s looking increasingly likely that Harris will be the Democratic nominee for president following the Democratic National Convention next month. As such, Harris’s past career and statements are reentering the public discourse—including her support for Meghan Markle.

Twice, Harris has posted about the Duchess of Sussex—once in October 2019, resharing a video of Meghan in South Africa talking about the negative press she received during her pregnancy. “This is incredibly important. We must remember that it’s a sign of strength to show emotion,” she wrote on Twitter. “Meghan, we are with you.”

In June 2020, Harris also posted a clip from the virtual graduation address Meghan gave in 2020, writing, “‘The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing.’ Thank you, Meghan, for this powerful statement.”

Meghan, too, has spoken about her admiration for Vice President Harris. In August 2020, the Duchess of Sussex filmed a conversation about suffrage with Gloria Steinem. During that conversation, the two spoke about then-candidate Harris. “The heart of the Democratic party has been Black women, actually, and now there is a potential Vice President who is Black and that’s exciting,” Steinem said. In response, Meghan agreed, saying, “I’m so excited to see that kind of representation. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity.”

“As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see,” Meghan continued. “And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break through in a different way.”
