Deadpool & Wolverine has two characters front and center, but Deadpool has had many memorable partnerships that can spawn a franchise of their own.
Deadpool’s entry into the MCU brings its own set of opportunities for great stories, given that the character just works so well in a multitude of settings. If Marvel felt inclined to make a Deadpool and Spider-Man film, the studio could also create another franchise under the MCU, one that could use Deadpool in multiversal or time travel films, with a companion who would gel well with the character.
Deadpool could gel with a slew of characters
Spider-Man and Deadpool would be a great team-up for Shawn Levy to work with, but other characters could have Deadpool feature in a film with them as well. Shawn Levy himself, in the latest issue of Total Film, talked about how the character brings his unique charm and narrative abilities to any story he is inserted in. He said:
The thing about Deadpool is I think he makes everything more interesting because of his audacity. But, boy, I’d sure love to see Deadpool and Spidey. That’s a movie I’d love to make. I feel like Tom Holland would run circles around everyone else.
While a Spider-Man and Deadpool film might have to be a distinct film from the new Spider-Man film that Marvel wants to make, this could apply to other characters like Colossus, Captain America, and Daredevil, all of whom would be perfect for an adventure with the character, on a smaller scale, or as another multiversal film.
Deadpool & Wolverine is all set to be the cinematic event of 2024
Deadpool & Wolverine may be Marvel’s only offering for 2024, but the hype around the film has already managed to attract the kind of attention that Marvel films have had a reputation for. With a projected box office collection of at least 200 million on the opening weekend, if not more, Deadpool & Wolverine is set to become one of the most successful films of 2024, with the possibility of doing better than all of Marvel’s 2023 offerings combined.
The film already has a slew of positive press around it, which makes it very attractive to superhero fans across the board, which was a luxury that The Marvels did not have. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed a good amount, it was expected that the film would bring in more than what it did.
Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel’s one hope at winning back fans, but it will not be enough to have people consistently coming back to theatres for MCU films. That road is a long one and will require multiple hits from the studio to cultivate again.
