Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has some disappointing words about the live-action debut of Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2024 was a historical year for Marvel Studios as they launched their first project based on Marvel’s beloved mutants in the form of X-Men ’97, a sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series. However, when it comes to the superhero team in live-action, a reboot is currently being developed by Marvel Studios.
Screen Rant recently chatted with Feige for the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine, which will be the only Phase 5 movie for Marvel Studios in 2024. While promoting the summer film, Feige was asked if fans could look forward to seeing Gambit in the MCU following the hero’s devastating death in X-Men ’97 episode 5. Despite recent interest, the studio head had a disappointing update for those hoping to see Gambit in live-action, saying the following:
Kevin Feige: I can’t [confirm Gambit is coming in a future live-action project]! [laughs] But I’m glad that you were so touched.
Will Gambit Ever Get A Shot At A Live-Action Redemption?
While the original X-Men movies brought multiple iconic mutants to life, Gambit has had quite a complex and unfortunate cinematic history. Even though Taylor Kitsch played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the film was ultimately not a success and his depiction of the beloved hero was one of the criticized aspects. This would be the last time Gambit was depicted on the big screen, as he has yet to be featured in another X-Men movie.
Despite being attached to headline a Gambit movie, Channing Tatum’s superhero film got stuck in development hell for years at 20th Century Fox. Once Disney acquired the studio, Gambit became another canceled Fox-Marvel film that never saw the light of day. There have been theories that Tatum’s long-lost version of Gambit may or may not have a secret cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, as the film will bid farewell to the X-Men movie universe.
Luckily, with the MCU’s X-Men reboot coming up, Gambit is more than likely going to be one of the heroes who gets featured in the re-imagination. Even though Feige couldn’t reveal anything about Gambit in live-action right now, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have plans for the X-Men icon. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what becomes of the X-Men in the MCU as Marvel Studios get ready to explore the mutants.
Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters on July 26.
