Fake Death? Scarlet Witch’s Surprise Return to the MCU Shakes Things Up

Marvel Studios already revealed exactly how the Scarlet Witch can return to the MCU, despite her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Even though the Scarlet Witch lost her life during 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios already revealed exactly how she can return to the MCU. Elizabeth Olsen first appeared as Wanda Maximoff in the post-credits scene of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but made her official debut in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, alongside her brother, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro Maximoff, a.k.a. Quicksilver. Since then, Wanda Maximoff has undergone a huge transformation, as her brother’s death, Vision’s murder in Infinity War and the destruction of her Hex in WandaVision forged her into a powerful MCU villain.

Wanda Maximoff’s evolution into the Darkhold-corrupted Scarlet Witch in the MCU’s Phase 4 saw her come to blows with Doctor Strange and America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After chasing Strange and Chavez across the multiverse and killing several prominent superheroes, the Scarlet Witch saw the error of her ways and sacrificed herself to destroy Mount Wundagore and the Darkhold. Elizabeth Olsen has been rumored to be returning to the MCU since then, and while there’s been no confirmation, the Scarlet Witch may have demonstrated a secret power that could bring her back into the MCU.

The Scarlet Witch Healed Herself In Doctor Strange 2

This new power was most prominently put on display after Doctor Strange trapped the Scarlet Witch in the Mirror Dimension during her attack on Kamar-Taj. Most people who’ve been trapped in the Mirror Dimension haven’t been able to escape without the use of a sling ring, but the Scarlet Witch creepily climbed out of the otherworldly place, her body broken and cracked just like the mirrors. Despite being deformed, however, the Scarlet Witch quickly healed her wounds, which is an ability that she hadn’t yet showcased throughout her eight-year-long MCU history, and this could prove crucial to bringing her back.

The Scarlet Witch’s Secret Power Makes Her Even More Powerful

When Could The Scarlet Witch Return To The MCU?

Even though neither Marvel Studios nor Elizabeth Olsen have yet confirmed a return for Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch in the MCU’s future, and the character is currently presumed dead at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, speculation has been rife about her return. A well-timed flash of red during Mount Wundagore’s collapse led to theories that the Scarlet Witch could have teleported herself away from the destruction, and now that a healing ability has been revealed, she could come back stronger than ever. There are several upcoming MCU projects that could easily include the Scarlet Witch.

It’s possible that the Scarlet Witch could return as early as 2024’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, after Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness debuted in WandaVision and built a strong connection to Wanda Maximoff. Olsen could also return in WandaVision’s second spinoff, Vision Quest, though the status of this project is unclear. Perhaps the most likely place for the Scarlet Witch’s return after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in Phase 6’s Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Scarlet Witch could also have a role in the MCU’s X-Men reboot, as she was a prominent Marvel Comics mutant for decades.
