Dune Director Denis Villeneuve Exposes Marvel’s Mistakes

Denis Villeneuve shared his thoughts on Marvel movies almost three years ago, and his criticism has become a common problem for the MCU.

Denis Villeneuve voiced criticisms of Marvel movies almost three years ago, and his critiques have become the same that many people have regarding the MCU’s current state. Villeneuve may be the Lisan al Gaib of cinema right now, as Dune: Part Two is doing exceptionally well and dominating the box office. The director has proven to be one of the best filmmakers in the industry, and he hasn’t shied away from sharing his thoughts on Marvel films. In a 2021 interview with El Mundo (via IndieWire), Villeneuve said that “cut and paste” Marvel films were turning audiences into “zombies.”

“Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today.”

At the time, Villeneuve may have been a bit harsh on the MCU. In the second half of 2021, Marvel released Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, three films that felt distinguishable from each other and didn’t follow the same MCU formula. However, the “cut and paste” feel that the Dune director alluded to has become a significant issue for the MCU. However, it could soon change.

Why Villeneuve’s ‘Cut And Paste’ Criticism Has Become A Real Problem For The MCU

Scott looks surprised in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

The MCU doesn’t have the same control over the box office that it used to. Recent films like The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed. Some would argue that superhero fatigue is setting in, but there is also the argument that Marvel movies just aren’t as good as they used to be. There have been a few hits since Endgame, but the consistency isn’t there anymore, and Villeneuve’s comments have become a current problem for the MCU.

The MarvelsQuantumania, and Thor: Love and Thunder received mixed to poor reviews, with many saying that these films are starting to feel too similar. They have the same jokes, an over-reliance on special effects, and bland action scenes. Marvel films have always had action and humor, but these elements are now overshadowing the character depth and emotionally rich storylines that are present in the MCU’s best projects. Fortunately, Marvel has an upcoming movie that will hopefully shake up the formula.

Why Deadpool & Wolverine Could Break The ‘Cut & Paste’ Feel of the MCU

Deadpool in a torn up car in Deadpool & Wolverine trailer

The only MCU film in 2024 is Deadpool & Wolverine, and it could be the one that turns the tide for Marvel. It’s the MCU’s first rated-R film, as it will feature Deadpool’s trademark violence and crude language. Many viewers have wanted more mature content from Marvel, and this film will be a refreshing change of pace. It will also include Deadpool’s meta humor that not only mocks Marvel, but also whatever Ryan Reynolds wants to make fun of. Deadpool claims he’s “Marvel Jesus” and he could be if this movie saves the MCU. Hopefully, other upcoming Marvel movies follow his lead.
