In a 2021 interview with El Mundo (via IndieWire), Villeneuve said that “cut and paste” Marvel films were turning audiences into “zombies.”

“Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today.”

At the time, Villeneuve may have been a bit harsh on the MCU. In the second half of 2021, Marvel released Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, three films that felt distinguishable from each other and didn’t follow the same MCU formula. However, the “cut and paste” feel that the Dune director alluded to has become a significant issue for the MCU. However, it could soon change.

Hopefully, other upcoming Marvel movies follow his lead.
