Deadpool & Wolverine Makes International History

We are only about a month removed from the release of what is anticipated to be one of the biggest movies of the year, Deadpool & Wolverine. It has long been known that July 26 is the big day in America, but international markets have started sharing their release dates as well, and something very unusual has occurred with the Chinese release. It turns out, China will also be releasing the movie on July 26, the first time America and China have synced up on a release date for a Deadpool movie.

China Prioritizing Deadpool & Wolverine

While it is always difficult to predict how Hollywood movies will fare in foreign markets, it seems to bode well that China is prioritizing releasing it at the same time. That would seem to indicate that they expect Deadpool & Wolverine to be a popular movie in the country. That is especially fascinating since the first Deadpool did not even get a Chinese release, whereas Deadpool 2 only got released with significant edits to turn it into a PG-13 movie.

One interesting note, even though Deadpool 2 released much later in China than it was elsewhere, as well as effectively being censored for the market, it did still make about $40 million. Perhaps that respectable showing for the circumstances is what has made Chinese film distributors see Deadpool & Wolverine as a movie to prioritize this time around.

Edits For Violence And Language

However, it does bear remarking upon that it has been disclosed that Deadpool & Wolverine will still be getting edited for China, though it is supposedly minimal. All that has been shared is that the edits are for violence and language. It remains to be seen how significant this will be and whether it will still fit into the Deadpool spirit of things.

Piggybacking Off Of Logan’s Success

Another factor that might be revealing China’s interest in Deadpool & Wolverine is that it has Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine. When Logan was released in China, it made over $100 million, so clearly the character is popular internationally. As such, Chinese film distributors might be anticipating sales as strong as what American markets are hoping for. Analysts believe Deadpool & Wolverine is poised to make at least $200 million domestically in its opening week.

Hopefully A Stronger Performance Than The Last Jedi

Mark Hamill
Predicting the response of the Chinese film market can be difficult, though. Movies that have performed very well in America have been major flops in China. In fact, Star Wars: The Last Jedi made over $600 million in North America, but was removed from all theaters in China after just two weeks due to only making a little over $30 million. It is hard to imagine Deadpool & Wolverine performing that poorly, though.

Huge Expectations

Deadpool & Wolverine

Theaters in general are struggling to find the kind of hits that they used to. It is more of a rarity these days to see major crowd-pleasers like the recent Inside Out 2. However, China seems to think that Deadpool & Wolverine will be something notable. And fans locally are certainly excited for the film as well. So July 26 will be a big day to see if the latest Deadpool lives up to some big expectations.
