Deadpool & Wolverine’s official trailer has revealed a closer look at Hugh Jackman’s new, comic-accurate costume as the returning clawed mutant hero.
Hugh Jackman’s new MCU costume as Wolverine has been fully revealed in the official trailer for Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine. Hugh Jackman was confirmed to be joining Ryan Reynolds in Phase 5’s Deadpool & Wolverine back in September 2022, reprising his role of the clawed X-Men member from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. Jackman previously portrayed James “Logan” Howlett’s Wolverine between 2000’s X-Men and 2017’s Logan, with the latter being his then-final adventure as the iconic Marvel hero. However, after Disney’s acquisition of Fox was finalized in 2019, the opportunity arose for Hugh Jackman to debut in the MCU.
Promo images and set photos from Deadpool & Wolverine had previously revealed that Hugh Jackman will receive a vibrant, yellow-and-blue superhero suit in the upcoming movie. While the first teaser trailer didn’t unveil much about the new costume, Deadpool & Wolverine’s official trailer, which was released on April 22, 2024, highlighted new details about the suit, and the version of Wolverine who dons it. Deadpool & Wolverine, set to release on July 26, will mark Hugh Jackman’s first Marvel project since retiring the role after Logan, so seeing him in his upgraded superhero costume is very exciting for the MCU.
Fox’s X-Men Franchise Never Put Wolverine In A Yellow & Blue Costume
Despite portraying Wolverine for 17 years in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman was never gifted a comic-accurate superhero suit. Fox dulled down all of the X-Men team members’ costumes from Marvel Comics to better fit the time period, as audiences may not have been as receptive to live-action adaptations of the more vibrant and colorful costumes from Marvel Comics. This pattern saw the original X-Men gifted black uniforms, while the rebooted versions received yellow and black spandex suits. These took more inspiration from Marvel Comics, but Wolverine wasn’t included in the team’s line-up in 2011’s X-Men: First Class.
A deleted scene from 2013’s The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s second solo project as the clawed mutant, teased him wearing a more comic-accurate, yellow-and-brown costume in future projects. This scene provided a glimpse at Wolverine’s iconic mask and gloves from Marvel Comics, but Jackman’s next appearance as Wolverine in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past omitted this costume completely. It was a shame that Wolverine never sported his comic-accurate superhero costume in Fox’s X-Men franchise, particularly as audiences became more open to these wild designs in more recent years, but Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is set to rectify this completely.
Wolverine’s New Costume Is Very Comic-Accurate
In a wild divergence from his previous appearances in Fox’s X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will be receiving a comic-accurate costume in the MCU’s upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. Set photos and Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailers have shown that Jackman will sport a yellow-and-blue costume that appears to be taken straight from the pages of Marvel Comics. Wolverine donned this suit in his very first appearance in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #180, which saw him battle Bruce Banner’s Hulk and a Wendigo in the Canadian wilderness. Despite this inspiration, there are still differences between Wolverine’s suit in the comics and in live-action.
In Marvel Comics’ Incredible Hulk #180, Wolverine was introduced in a sleeveless yellow-and-blue get-up with bright blue gloves, large shoulder pads, a striking mask, and black stripes across the torso of his yellow suit. Hugh Jackman’s costume in Deadpool & Wolverine is different in many ways, most notably as the suit has full sleeves, and the proportions of the armor are smaller to seem more realistic and believable. Indeed, throughout Deadpool & Wolverine’s new trailer, Wolverine’s suit becomes more reminiscent of his Marvel Comics roots, which is a brilliant transformation many have been waiting to see for over two decades.
Wolverine Loses His Sleeves In Deadpool & Wolverine
Wolverine’s Costume Has Sheaths For His Claws
Wolverine’s costume in Fox’s X-Men franchise never had sheaths allowing his claws to extend and retract with ease, and jokes were even made that he had to pierce his costume to release his claws. This won’t be a problem in Deadpool & Wolverine, as Hugh Jackman’s yellow-and-blue superhero suit has specific sheaths, which will make the release of his claws even sleeker, cooler and more comic-accurate. This will also avoid the CGI missteps of Fox’s past projects, such as the original X-Men trilogy and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, perhaps making Deadpool & Wolverine Hugh Jackman’s most entertaining and badass adventure yet.
Hugh Jackman will be the longest-running Marvel actor ever following his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine , having portrayed Logan for 24 years.
Wolverine Still Doesn’t Have His Mask In Deadpool & Wolverine’s New Trailer
Newly-revealed merch from the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine seems to have confirmed that Wolverine will also be sporting his iconic mask from Marvel Comics in the MCU’s Phase 5. Despite this, Hugh Jackman hasn’t actually been seen in this mask just yet, as neither Deadpool & Wolverine’s February 2024 teaser nor the movie’s official trailer have displayed this exciting new accessory. Deadpool & Wolverine’s new trailer focused more on Wolverine than previous promo material, but still didn’t even include a glimpse at Wolverine’s mask, though viewers won’t have to wait too long until Hugh Jackman finally dons this iconic cowl.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Costumes Have Similarities
Deadpool & Wolverine’s first teaser trailer revealed that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool will be gifted a new superhero suit courtesy of the Time Variance Authority, and the fact that Deadpool and Wolverine’s costumes bear similarities suggests the TVA will also kit out Wolverine. Both suits are similar in style, with the same patterning on the abdomen, boot design, gloves and belts, with the latter each displaying the emblem of the respective hero. This creates a brilliant sense of synergy between the titular heroes of Deadpool & Wolverine, hinting at the exciting connection the pair will form in the MCU’s Phase 5.
