‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Celebrated as “Marvel Love Letter” With “Epic Action” in First Reactions
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star in Marvel Studios’ first R-rated feature, which bowed Monday in New York.
Fifteen years after Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman first brought Deadpool and Wolverine to the big screen in the ill-fated X-Men: Origins — Wolverine, the duo are giving the characters a proper buddy movie.
Reynolds and Jackman premiered their movie at a premiere in New York Monday, while press across the country also were treated to the first full screenings of the movie. The first reactions are now arriving on social media, coming ahead of official critics reviews, which hit Tuesday. (Scroll down to read the reactions).
In New York, NSYNC attended the premiere, one Hollywood Reporter eyewitness noted.
The movie is tracking for a massive $165 million-plus domestic bow when it opens this weekend, which would mark the biggest R-rated bow of all time.
Frequent Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine and wrote the script along with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Zeb Wells. Emma Corrin stars in the film as its antagonist, while a number of faces from Deadpool and Wolverine’s past appear, including Dafne Keen, who played Wolverine’s daughter, Laura, in Logan (2017).
The feature took a long and winding road to the big screen. 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool turned out to be a surprise hit in 2016, propelling Reynolds and the character to new levels of success. It was followed two years later by the fast-tracked Deadpool 2, but the third installment took six years to make it to the screen, as things were complicated by 20th Century Fox’s sale to Disney. The move gave Marvel Studios access to Deadpool and X-Men characters for the first time, and also marks Marvel Studios’ first R-rated film.

The premiere comes ahead of Thursday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel for the film, as well as Marvel’s Saturday evening panel, where it is expected to reveal a look at future movies, such as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts.
