The Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking to have a great summer as projections for Deadpool & Wolverine‘s box office reveal a strong opening weekend. Wade Wilson is making his way into the MCU timeline as Deadpool & Wolverine cements the conclusion of the X-Men franchise. Since the Deadpool & Wolverine cast will also feature Hugh Jackman returning to play Logan, the anticipation for the Phase 5 film has only continued to increase.
After a long wait, the release of Deadpool & Wolverine is only weeks away, as Marvel Studios gets ready for its only MCU movie in 2024. According to THR, Deadpool & Wolverine is currently tracking for an opening weekend haul of $160-165 million at the domestic box office. These numbers are more conservative estimates than those previously reported by The Quorum, which projected Deadpool & Wolverine for an opening weekend of $200 million or more. More recently, Box Office Pro reported the movie would open to $175-$200 million.
Why Deadpool & Wolverine’s Box Office Is So Important For The MCU
While time will tell what the final numbers will be during its debut weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine is crucial for the MCU. For the first time in Marvel Studios’ entire theatrical history, Deadpool & Wolverine will be their first R-rated movie, which is why its box office will be something the executives follow very closely. If Deadpool & Wolverine ends up being a box office hit even with its R-rating, it may pave the way for more MCU movies in that vein.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s projected success is also extremely important in light of some of the MCU’s recent flops. While the superhero genre as a whole has struggled in the last two years, the MCU took an especially big hit in 2023 with The Marvels, which became the lowest earning MCU movie ever. If Deadpool & Wolverine reaches beyond $1 billion, it will be the first MCU movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home to accomplish that feat.
With a major opening like $160-165 million domestically, it begs the question of how big the global box office opening will be for Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie will be getting a release in China, which could massively boost the box office. Needless to say, Deadpool & Wolverine is clearly eyed to become one of the most successful films in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
