Deadpool And Wolverine Isn’t The MCU Team-Up Fans Need To See

With Deadpool & Wolverine coming out later this month, there’s plenty of excitement about seeing the characters finally interacting. While I’m excited about the movie, there’s one duo I’m much more excited to see in the MCU, Deadpool and Spider-Man. While Wade and Logan have a longer history, the friendship between Peter Parker and Wade Wilson is much more interesting.

Deadpool Has Always Loved Spider-Man

The relationship between Deadpool and Spider-Man in the comics has been dynamic, gradually developing into a mutual friendship. Initially, this was a one-sided affair with Wade being an obsessive fan of the wall-crawler, while Peter considered him a villain.

However, as the two worked together they began to see each other as genuine friends despite their conflicting morals.

Deadpool And Spider-Man Are Real Friends

While Deadpool has positive relationships with several characters, like Captain America, Spider-Man is one of his few friends in the superhero community.

Wade Wilson is often written as crass and unlikable, with characters like Wolverine generally tolerating more than enjoying his company. Peter Parker is one of the few characters who seems to develop actual non-romantic affection for the mercenary after seeing Wade’s attempts to act more heroically.

Spider-Man/Deadpool

Usually, Deadpool is paired with stoic characters like Wolverine or Cable to counterbalance his comedic tone, which his partnership with Spider-Man subverts by giving him someone who will quip back at him.

Comics featuring the two are often action comedies with the two bouncing jokes off of each other almost every page. It’s a dichotomy reminiscent of 90s buddy cop movies like Rush Hour or Bad Boys which has made it a fan favorite team-up.

This dynamic is explored throughout the Spider-Man/Deadpool ongoing series created by Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness. While the comic run had its ups and downs, the friendship built up over its 50 issues is one of the best in Marvel comics.

It highlights the deep moral divide that separates the mercenary from the superhero, while also showing how they bond over a shared sense of humor.

I also want to see the Deadpool and Spider-Man relationship in the MCU because it would offer something new for the MCU version of Peter Parker.

Spidey has never had the chance to be the responsible mentor figure in a relationship, with much of his arc being tied to Iron Man’s mentoring of the younger hero. Wade would give him a very different type of friendship with another hero.

The dynamic between Deadpool and Spider-Man is also a better fit for the MCU than the Wade and Logan pairing. Action comedy is what the MCU does best as exemplified by Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, which would make the two quipping back and forth a natural fit.

By leaning into these comedic elements it avoids humor undercutting more serious characters, something many fans have grown to dislike about the franchise.

Maybe One Day

Deadpool & Wolverine represents an exciting new phase for the MCU, but it’s not focused on the relationship I’m eager to see on the big screen. In general, I’m most interested in seeing established MCU characters like Spider-Man interacting with new characters, and the peculiar friendship between Peter and Wade makes it something I want to see.

But unless an unexpected Spidey cameo happens in Deadpool & Wolverine, my dreams of seeing Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland paling around will have to wait.
