Chris Evans’ Deadpool & Wolverine Return Perfectly Twists 1 Iconic MCU Phase 2 Line

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers' Captain America and Johnny Storm's Human Torch in the MCU

Chris Evans’ return as Johnny Storm’s Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine gave him the perfect opportunity to put a brilliant spin on one of his most iconic quotes as Steve Rogers’ Captain America in the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine featured appearances from a number of returning Marvel actors, including the likes of Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner and Dafne Keen. However, Chris Evans’ return was the biggest and most welcome surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, but he didn’t come back as his legendary MCU hero, Captain America.

Instead, Chris Evans reprised his role of Johnny Storm from 2005’s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel in Deadpool & Wolverine, allowing the movie to retain Steve Rogers’ emotional ending from Avengers: Endgame while harking back to Marvel’s movie history. Seeing Evans back in action as the flameproof Fantastic Four member was incredible, and this gave Evans the chance to play something new in the MCU. The major differences between Steve Rogers’ Captain America and Johnny Storm’s Human Torch were never more evident than in Deadpool & Wolverine’s hilarious post-credits scene.

Captain America’s “Language” Line Was One Of Age Of Ultron’s Most Memorable Moments

In Deadpool & Wolverine’s final moments, audiences saw Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm deliver an expletive-filled monologue in which he expressed his darkest and most graphic thoughts about Emma Corrin’s villainous Cassandra Nova. This was a scene that many never thought Chris Evans would partake in as part of the MCU, as he spent the best part of a decade playing the somewhat-uptight Steve Rogers. This was put front-and-center in one scene in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, as Captain America tells Iron Man off for cursing with the now iconic, “Language!”

This moment was one of Age of Ultron’s most memorable, notably because the other Avengers continued to berate Steve Rogers for his distaste towards slightly vulgar language. This was completely flipped on its head in Deadpool & Wolverine, as Chris Evans got the chance to deliver a monologue full of language that Steve Rogers would certainly have something to say about. Evans has spoken out about his joy at speaking these lines, with this moment fully showcasing the differences between his two superhero characters.

Deadpool & Wolverine Perfectly Showed The Difference Between Chris Evans’ Captain America & Human Torch

This monologue in Deadpool & Wolverine helped to clearly separate Chris Evans’ returning MCU character from his more-legendary Captain America. The upstanding, steadfast and patriotic Captain America would never speak these lines, and perhaps wouldn’t even know what many of these phrases mean. Johnny Storm, on the other hand, can be arrogant, selfish and quick to pass the buck, which he tries to do by denying ever uttering this shocking monologue. Highlighting the differences between Captain America and the Human Torch made Chris Evans’ return in Deadpool & Wolverine even more spectacular.
