Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo release never-seen-before footage and info about the iconic Phase 2 movie.

Steve Rogers Heads into Battle and Bucky Barnes Wears his Mask in Captain America The Winter Soldier

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo celebrate Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s 10-year anniversary with behind-the-scenes footage and new info about the MCU movie. Back in Phase 2, Captain America’s MCU journey was only beginning with the hero’s first MCU sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which brought back Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, this time as the main villain. Ten years and dozens of MCU movies and shows later, the Russo brothers’ work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier stands as an especially popular installment of the Infinity Saga and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

To celebrate the ten-year anniversary of Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s release, Joe and Anthony Russo reveal on their Instagram page, therussobrothers, never-seen-before footage of the film’s production. The post includes Captain America’s stunt double jumping over a plane, explosions at the Triskelion, and green screen work featuring Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce. Additionally, the Russos also provide some technical information about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. According to the directors, some action sequences were shot with a handheld technique. They used three lenses with three focal lengths, which they combined with different shutter angles to capture the fight sequences with a fast-faced but clear style. Read the details below:

50mm and 75mm work best with a 45 degree shutter. 75 allows you to track very specific moments. Knife catch, etc. You can chase your characters in close ups with the 75, and highlight emotional beats. Requires a steadier hand. The 50 is the workhorse though. It gets you the action with a visceral, kinetic energy. But the eye has an easier time following it than the 75. Anything over 75 mm on a 45 degree shutter is incoherent. 40 mm is best if you want to include both actors in the same frame.

Why Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Action Scenes Remain Some Of The MCU’s Best Even 10 Years Later

The Russos’ Attention To Detail Enhanced Steve Rogers’ Second MCU Movie

Every movie and show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with high-octane action sequences, but not all of them are as visually striking as Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Russo brothers shot each action sequence with as much realism as the story allowed, and their technical know-how allowed them to make fight moves like a knife flip and a shield catch appear to have as much weight as the clash between Hulk’s fist and a Chitauri Leviathan, if not more. The visual impact created by the Russo brothers’ filming techniques underlined the grounded stakes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s plot, where a well-placed punch or a single bullet could land godlike Marvel characters in the hospital.

This attention to detail wasn’t limited to Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s action sequences. Steve Rogers’ disappointment in governmental organizations, Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD, and the villains’ plans to end innocent lives with a system disguised as a surveillance system are all inspired additions to the MCU’s lore. These elements are intertwined in such a way that Captain America’s struggles to save his best friend lie at the center of the conflict, striking a balance between Steve Rogers’ personal life and Captain America’s heroic duties.

The Russo brothers’ work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened the door for Captain America: Civil War, which also dealt with the political themes of superhero affairs within the MCU. And after two consecutive successes with critics and general audiences, the Russo brothers had proven their worth as the helmers of the Infinity Saga’s two-part conclusion. Just a few years after Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s 2014 release, the Russo brothers finished their MCU tenure with honors when Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame broke all kinds of records. Considering their impeccable run with the MCU, it’s clear that Joe and Anthony Russo’s attention to technical detail is an essential part of their work.
