Captain America: Brave New World Director on Why Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk Didn’t Appear

Mark Ruffalo Won't Be in 'Captain America: Brave New World' as Hulk

Despite featuring several predominant characters from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, including Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross, Captain America: Brave New World did not include Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), much to the fans’ surprise. The film seemingly drew inspiration from a hoard of the rage-fueled superhero’s comic book storylines, especially highlighted by the role of Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk. As such, the presence of the Hulk only seemed natural, only for the Green Goliath to miss out on an outing in Captain America 4. Director Julius Onah has now come out to provide a clarification behind the decision to omit Dr. Banner and his alter-ego from the film.

During his recent interview, Onah revealed that while the topic of including Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner in Captain America: Brave New World did come up, the team ultimately decided against it to maintain focus on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

“Well, I think at the end of the day, and I’m happy it landed where it did—this is Sam’s story. This is Sam’s first cinematic adventure as Captain America. And you want it to be about Sam leaning into his superpower to overcome the odds,” the filmmaker noted. (via The Playlist)

He further explained the exclusion of the Hulk in Captain America 4, stating, “So, you pull in Banner—as great as Mark Ruffalo is and as exciting as it would be to have him—and suddenly, the focus shifts away from Sam. The conversation obviously came up, but ultimately, it felt like this wanted to be Sam’s film.”

Mark Ruffalo’s last appearance as the Hulk dates back to 2022, when he embodied Bruce Banner for the highly contentious Disney+ series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Since then, no official updates regarding the Hulk’s whereabouts have come out.
