Marvel recently suffered some disappointments in 2023 with The Marvels’ box office and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s negative reviews. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was the only Marvel movie that performed well in 2023. Luckily, it looks like Deadpool & Wolverine may be exactly what the MCU needs to quash talks of superhero fatigue.
In the results of their annual summer movie poll, Fandango found that Deadpool & Wolverine is the most anticipated movie of Summer 2024. While Bob Iger made a good argument against this idea, the future of the MCU still feels tenuous. Even the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 didn’t feel like much of a victory, since it was the last film featuring the original team and directed by James Gunn. If anything, the movie felt like a potential way to end one’s MCU on a high point as opposed to something that would generate excitement for future movies.
Luckily, Fandango’s poll makes it clear that audiences are still excited about seeing Deadpool & Wolverine, despite the MCU’s recent stumbles. If anything, viewers may be spurred on by their recent disappointments to go see a movie that will likely make fun of Marvel’s missteps. Both previous Deadpool movies performed well at the box office, which is hopefully a good sign that these poll results will translate into ticket sales.
Deadpool & Wolverine also seems like it will have a lot of ways to help make the future of the MCU feel more exciting. Not only will Deadpool be joining the MCU, but the movie will likely introduce some elements of the X-Men into the main universe. Deadpool & Wolverine will also reportedly feature a lot of exciting cameos, giving audiences yet another reason to see the movie in theaters, before all the good surprises get spoiled.
