Beau DeMayo Really Did a Number on 1 Avenger in X-Men ’97 by Belittling His 84-Year Legacy and Reducing Him into a ‘Government Lapdog’
A beloved Avenger made a cameo in X-Men ’97, only to be belittled by Rogue in Episode 5.
Marvel has been enjoying a great run this year, which started with Beau DeMayo’s revival of the 1990s animated X-Men series. X-Men ’97 was a masterstroke by Marvel, that not only brought back old viewers but also raked up new ones.

The show was widely commended for its writing, thanks to DeMayo’s genius. However, there were moments in the show that caused some controversy, like the depiction of Captain America in one episode.
That one infamous Captain America cameo

X-Men by itself is an eye-catching IP, but Beau DeMayo took it up a notch further by giving other franchise favorites space in the acclaimed series. One such scene was Captain America’s cameo in Episode 5 of the show, ‘Remember It‘.
In the episode, Captain America investigates the Genosha attack, leading him to encounter Rogue, who is also seeking vengeance for the same incident. They have a short interaction, yet Captain America declines to confront the assailants in Rogue’s way, prompting her to throw away his shield a couple of miles away in a fit of anger.
The scene not only caused Captain America a lot of trouble, but some of his fans were also not inclined that Cap would act that way with Rogue.
Fans believe X-Men ’97 did Captain America dirty

There have been mixed feelings about that cameo on the internet, with several fans feeling like it was a dent in Steve Rogers’ legacy. Some of them debated it on Reddit, saying that Captain America is not a Government lapdog, and would have acted more rationally.
In the MCU, despite being empowered by a serum developed by the US Government, Steve is anything but a Government agent. He is a people’s hero, and he would not hesitate to go against the government if he senses something wrong, which we have witnessed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War. However, Cap in the 1980s and 90s was written differently, so DeMayo’s depiction is not entirely wrong.
X-Men ’97 is streaming on Disney+.
