The future of Avengers 5 is currently uncertain, but a new theory suggests that the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be retooling the film into Avengers vs. X-Men. Everything known about Avengers 5 seems to be in flux, but Marvel Studios has recently hired a new writer and confirmed that it will no longer be called The Kang Dynasty. This theory seems surprisingly likely after the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees the integration of several X-Men characters into the MCU. An Avengers vs. X-Men film would be an excellent way to revitalize the franchise.

Fox’s timeline of X-Men movies seemed to be at a close after Disney acquired the studio. However, there have been surprising references in the MCU ever since. The actor who played Quicksilver in Fox’s franchise appeared in WandaVision in a strange cameo with an odd explanation, and then Patrick Stewart appeared as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The MCU seems more than willing to use the canon of the established Fox universe. Building an event film around the relationship between these franchises would be an incredible next step.

The Marvels Ending Is The Perfect Way To Set Up Avengers vs X-Men

Monica Rambeau Seemed To Enter The Fox X-Men Universe

In The Marvels post-credits scene, the MCU movie seemed to introduce Fox’s X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the film, Monica Rambeau wakes up after being transported across dimensions. In the room, which looks like where Jean Grey examined Logan in X-Men, Monica meets the Kelsey Grammar iteration of Beast. This suggests that she has entered the X-Men universe with the original cast, including Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen’s Magneto. However, none of this has been confirmed, and it is certainly possible this is another universe altogether.

Notably, Marvel’s recent trend with post-credit scenes has left far too many details hanging for far too long, and it is unclear what exactly the intention for this scene was. There is precedent that this could be a simple tease that would lead to something several years down the road. However, it is also the perfect opportunity now for Marvel to tie their universe in with the Fox universe. Using this multiversal breach as an opportunity to confront collapsing timelines after Deadpool & Wolverine would be the perfect way to follow up on this tease.

Avengers 5 Is Reportedly Scrapping Kang’s Story

Another Villain Is Needed For Avengers 5

Kang fighting timelines in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

Avengers 5 is no longer The Kang Dynasty per recent reports. The villainous Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, was set up to be an enormous threat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumaniaAfter Quantumania disappointed at the box office, however, the future looked to be in doubt. Following Majors being convicted of assault and harassment, Disney and Marvel parted ways with him. Ever since, it has seemed Marvel has been searching for a new actor to take his place.

It is unclear if this is still the case. Kang no longer appears to be the main villain of Avengers 5, which has led to rumors concerning who could take his place. Ideas that have been passed around have included Doctor Doom. For full effect, however, there needs to be a pre-existing setup for the opponent that the Avengers face. With filming rumored to be starting next year, Marvel only has so much time to build up a new threat, making something like Avengers vs. X-Men, with all its established characters, seem that much better an idea.

Marvel Needs A Big X-Men Announcement

The Fox X-Men Could Revitalize The MCU

Jean Grey kisses Wolverine in x-men '97

Following the massive success of X-Men ’97, appetites for new X-Men content have never been more voracious. The team is one of the most celebrated in Marvel Comics history, and there has not been a proper X-Men film since the disappointing Dark Phoenix in 2019. While the MCU is working on a reboot, it seems that is still several years away. In the meantime, using more of the Fox X-Men in the MCU seems too good of an idea to pass up.

With the Deadpool & Wolverine box office set to break records, it would make sense for the studio to look at their options to use the existing X-Men a little bit more. Certainly, the X-Men cinematic universe has been around for more than 20 years, and a reboot inside the MCU makes sense, but audiences are clearly still interested in some of the heroes from that universe. With Wolverine & Deadpool’s release coming soon, it remains to be seen if the film will conclude that universe or set up even more crossovers.

Whatever happens in Avengers 5, it seems likely that, at minimum, Deadpool will appear in the film. Following his entry to the MCU, there is a great opportunity to bring back some of the other existing iterations of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, and the rest. Outfitting these heroes in the classic costumes they never got to have would be a great bit of fan service, and could make for the biggest Avengers movie yet. Whether Avengers 5 winds up being Avengers vs. X-Men remains to be seen, but the idea is surprisingly good.
