“Another dystopia where Logan’s last to die”: X-Men ‘97 Might Just Have Dropped a Subtle Hint to the Tortured Past of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine

Wolverine’s backstory in Deadpool 3 might have been hinted in X-Men ’97.

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine trailer has got fans quite excited about the movie but curious as well about Logan’s real connection with X-Men ’97. The full-length trailer gave the viewers a much better perspective of the world where Wolverine hails from, and it might just be the hint that fans needed.

It’s only been labeled as speculation since the film is yet to arrive, but what if the Wolverine in Deadpool 3 is the same version from X-Men ’97? For those who already know the story, the mutants in the animated series will all perish except for Logan. And where will he go? Probably making his live-action debut in Deadpool 3.

Logan’s Deadpool 3 Backstory Might Have Been Teased In X-Men ‘97

A famous scooper that goes by the name Blurayangel posted speculation on Twitter and wrote: “‘So another dystopia where Logan’s last to die.’ Sounds like the perfect lead-up to Deadpool and Wolverine.”

In an article posted by Game Rant, the outlet also noted of the line from X-Men ’97 and claimed that it “could refer to multiple stories, but the most well-known is Old Man Logan, where he’s the last living X-Man in a future wasteland.”

There is indeed a mirror event that takes place both in X-Men ’97 and in the recent Deadpool 3 trailer. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine comes from a place where he was blamed for having let down his co-mutants, which saw him end up becoming a lone wolf. In the aftermath of a seemingly catastrophic event, Logan was the only one who survived.

In the animated show, a similar scene happens, and the audience witnesses how Wolverine walked away while the rest of his former co-mutants are all gone. Interestingly, it also resembles the character’s fate in 2017’s Logan.

It is all slowly coming together, though fans still have to take this speculation with a grain of salt until it has been confirmed. The takeaway is that Logan had a really horrible past which became the catalyst for him to meet and team up with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.

While Wolverine had a traumatic past in both franchises, Hugh Jackman seems to be living his best career ever. The actor has been playing the clawed mutant for years, and for the first time ever, he had more fun filming for Deadpool 3. He told People:

I’ll probably have more fun on this movie than any other I’ve ever done. I think being on set with [Ryan] every day and those two on film in every city together every day. I think it’s fair to say they’ll be punching the s—t out of each other the whole time.”

He also claimed that there’s a character dynamic that he has never really gotten to explore when he played Wolverine in the past. Now, he’s starring alongside Reynolds’ Deadpool, his classic all-time comic book rival.
