Marvel Television’s Agents of SHIELD came to an end in 2020, but Marvel Studios may have just teased a revival of the popular MCU-adjacent series.

Marvel Studios may have just teased a revival of Marvel Television’s Agents of SHIELD in the MCU, four years after the popular series was canceled. Agents of SHIELD was initially developed as a series set within the world of the MCU that explored the smaller-scale adventures of the titular intelligence organization, which was first introduced with Nick Fury’s debut in Iron Man’s post-credits scene. Agents of SHIELD ran for seven seasons between 2013 and 2020, but was canceled following Marvel Studios’ expansion onto Disney+, and the question of Agents of SHIELD’s canon status to the MCU hasn’t yet been confirmed.

While Agents of SHIELD was canceled in 2020, there have been calls for characters and storyline elements from the series to be reintroduced to the MCU proper. These calls may soon be answered, as Marvel Studios Head of Television Brad Winderbaum recently teased that Agents of SHIELD could be revived in an interview with Agents of Fandom. With upcoming Marvel Studios projects such as Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97 reviving old TV shows (Daredevil and X-Men: The Animated Series, respectively), it’s possible Agents of SHIELD could be next, allowing the series to be integrated into the MCU’s official timeline.

We’re doing that right now. We’re in production on Daredevil: Born Again in New York, they’re shooting as we speak — I’m seeing text messages come up from set. That’s probably the next show that is going to kind of revisit and revive a really strong, and one of my favorite pockets of our universe and our fandom. And… you never know, is the answer!

How Could Agents Of SHIELD Return To The MCU?

Phil Coulson as team leader in Agents of SHIELD

SHIELD has been very quiet in the MCU since the organization was dismantled to smoke out HYDRA in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, only making brief appearances in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and being mentioned in several other MCU projects. The current status of SHIELD is unclear, particularly with organizations such as SWORD and SABER debuting, but it’s possible the organization is still operational. Agents of SHIELD saw SHIELD operate primarily in the shadows following the events of The Winter Soldier, which means it could present itself at any point in the MCU’s future.

In the MCU’s main continuity, Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson died at the hands of Loki during The Avengers, so it’s unlikely that Coulson would return as a member of SHIELD in the MCU’s future, as this would perhaps take too long to explain to the casual viewer. However, Agents of SHIELD cast members such as Ming Na-Wen’s Melinda May, Henry Simmons’ Mack and Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. the Inhuman Quake, could easily be integrated into the MCU’s current timeline. Daisy Johnson, in particular, could create the opportunity for Marvel Studios to begin to explore the Inhumans in the MCU.

Perhaps a new season of Agents of SHIELD could be adapted to focus on the staff members of SWORD or SABER. Marvel Studios already provided a glimpse of the storytelling opportunities aboard the SABER Space Station in 2023’s The Marvels, so this could be explored further in a dedicated series. SWORD also needs redemption following Tyler Hayward’s conquest in WandaVision, so new seasons of Agents of SHIELD could investigate the different intelligence organizations now spread out across the MCU. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the development of an Agents of SHIELD revival, but this could be on the cards.
