Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed the development of Eternals 2, but there are many other potential MCU projects that can continue the Eternals’ story.

Even though Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed the development of a sequel to 2021’s Eternals, there are several other potential MCU projects that could continue the stories of the new superhero team. Director Chloé Zhao introduced the Eternals to the MCU in 2021, with the team comprising Sersi, Ajak, Ikaris, Sprite, Kingo, Gilgamesh, Druig, Makkari, Phastos and Thena, cosmic beings created by the Celestials to foster population growth on worlds containing new Celestial seeds. Eternals marked a huge departure from the typical MCU story, and this experimentation led to Eternals becoming one of the most divisive projects in the MCU’s history.

Despite being such a divisive story, Eternals laid the foundations of many different narratives to unfold in the MCU’s future. Unfortunately, Marvel Studios hasn’t yet confirmed the development of the MCU’s potential Eternals 2, so it’s unclear exactly when Eternals’ loose ends might see some resolution. Following Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments, suggesting Marvel Studios will only be focusing on the strongest MCU franchises for the time being, Eternals 2 seems even less likely to go into production. However, Eternals’ titular team members could return in a number of upcoming and unannounced MCU projects to continue their game-changing storyline.

10. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4 Could Include Other Eternals Teams

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4 Hasn’t Been Confirmed After James Gunn’s MCU Departure

Marvel Studios changed the origins of the Eternals for their live-action adaptation, making them synthetic cosmic beings created by the Celestials instead of being the result of biological experiments on early humans in Marvel Comics. This connects the Eternals to the MCU’s space-faring storylines, which means that a potential Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 could be the perfect place to bring them back. Perhaps the new Guardians of the Galaxy could come across Thena, Makkari, Druig, Eros and Pip the Troll following Eternals’ mid-credits scene, helping to track down the missing Eternals and revealing more about Harry Styles’ Starfox.

The MCU’s new Guardians of the Galaxy team comprises Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Kraglin and Cosmo the Spacedog, as well as new members Phyla, Adam Warlock and Blurp.

9. Eternals’ Ending Has Been Rumored To Be Important To Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World Is Rumored To Revisit The Celestial Tiamut

Tiamut rising from the ocean in Eternals

While the exact story of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America: Brave New World has been kept under wraps, speculation suggests that the Phase 5 project will revisit the body of the Celestial Tiamut that rose from beneath the Earth in Eternals. The Eternals used the Uni-Mind to transform Tiamut into a harmless statue in Eternals, but this left his massive body jutting from the ocean, and this new setting hasn’t been seen since. Rumors hint at Tiamut being transformed into adamantium, an important metal for characters such as Wolverine, which could replace vibranium as the most-coveted resource in the MCU.

8. Thor Could Team Up With The Eternals In Thor 5

Thor: Love & Thunder Confirmed Thor Would Be Returning To The MCU

Following the disappointing reception to 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, speculation hints at the as-yet-unannounced Thor 5 taking on a new tone, veering away from Taika Waititi’s comedy. In 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, Thor became a more cosmic character, which could bring him into contact with the space-faring Eternals. After his experiences with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor might want to join a new superpowered team, and he would fit in perfectly among the god-like and nigh-immortal Eternals, which could also bring him closure, as Thanos’ brother is now involved with the team.

7. A Celestial-Focused MCU Project Has Been Rumored

Marvel Studios May Be Developing An Eternals Sequel Focused On The Celestials

A green Celestial creating a sun in Eternals

Back in 2022, Marvel Studios filed a trademark for the title Celestials: End of Time (via EUIPO), which led many to speculate that this hypothetical MCU project could be the sequel to Eternals. Rather than focusing directly on the team, however, this project could put the Celestials front-and-center, developing the mythology of the ancient otherworldly beings more than ever before. The Celestials have been in the MCU since the beginning, but only began to be explored in Eternals, so a pseudo-sequel would be the perfect place to investigate them further, and the Eternals could still be involved as supporting characters.

6. An Annihilation Movie Could Connect Several MCU Projects

The MCU’s Annihilation Adaptation Could Include The Eternals, Thor, The Guardians Of The Galaxy & Nova

Annihilation Day in Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics’ Annihilation event from 2006 has been rumored to be adapted for the MCU, and this speculation has increased as more cosmic heroes have been introduced. Annihilation saw Annihilus, the ruler of the Negative Zone, wage an attack on the Marvel Universe, but he was opposed and killed by the United Front, a group of warriors comprising Marvel’s most significant cosmic superheroes. While the Eternals didn’t have a role in the Marvel Comics storyline, an adaptation of Annihilation in the MCU would be a brilliant place for the team to reappear, especially since they are currently exploring the universe.

5. The MCU’s Nova Series Could Include Several Eternals Members

Marvel Studios’ Nova Project Has Now Been Confirmed

Richard Rider's Nova protecting space in Marvel Comics

Marvel Studios’ Head of Television, Streaming and Animation Brad Winderbaum recently provided confirmation that the MCU’s Nova project is in the works (via Comicbook.com). This project will debut Richard Rider’s Nova in the MCU, and this cosmically-focused superhero could meet several members of the Eternals, whether they be the ones audiences have already met, or others on any number of worlds harboring Celestial seeds. Nova is expected to explore Thanos’ attack on Xandar prior to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, so it would be brilliant to see Eros’ reaction to his own brother’s violent and destructive conquest across the MCU’s cosmos.

4. Eternals May Have Set Up The MCU’s Judgment Day

Marvel Comics’ Judgment Day Brought Together The Avengers, The X-Men & The Eternals

Avengers, X-Men and Eternals in Marvel Comics Judgment Day

Published in 2022, Marvel Comics’ A.X.E. Judgment Day was a massive crossover event that brought together the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals in a battle as Druig deemed mutantkind unfit for survival. However, Druig’s attempt to use the Celestial Progenitor, a.k.a. Avengers Mountain (the MCU’s Celestial Tiamut), led to the Progenitor deeming the whole of humanity unworthy. This brought the Avengers, X-Men and Eternals together to battle the Progenitor and save humanity. Eternals set up huge elements of Marvel Comics’ Judgment Day for the MCU, so it would be fantastic to see these teams band together in an epic crossover movie.

3. Star-Lord Has Connections To Celestials & The Eternals

Chris Pratt Will Be Returning As The Legendary Star-Lord

Chris Pratt as Peter Quill's Star-Lord in Guardians 3

2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended with Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill retiring from the titular team and returning to Earth, but his retirement won’t be permanent. Peter Quill has been confirmed to be returning as the Legendary Star-Lord, and his connection to the Celestials could see him team up with the Eternals. Quill’s father, Ego, was a Celestial, meaning Quill himself has Celestial DNA, though he doesn’t seem able to access his abilities following Ego’s demise. Nevertheless, Peter Quill’s biology provides a clear way for him to join the Eternals, with his gifts perhaps once again being unlocked.

2. The Eternals Will Likely Have A Role In Avengers 5 & Secret Wars

Avengers 5 & Avengers: Secret Wars Will Release In The MCU’s Phase 6

Kingo, Sprite, Sersi, Ikaris, Thena and Gilgamesh in Druig's forest in Eternals

Although Phase 6’s Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars wouldn’t be able to be considered sequels to Eternals, these crossover projects are perhaps the most likely place that the Eternals will reappear. Currently scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027, respectively, Avengers 5 and Secret Wars are expected to include most of the MCU’s heroes fighting together to stop incursions from destroying the multiverse. These projects will bring the Eternals into contact with many MCU heroes, akin to the Guardians of the Galaxy’s inclusion in Infinity War and Endgame, so could help to clear up some of Eternals’ loose ends.

1. Eternals 2 Is Still The Best Place For The Team To Return

Eternals 2 Hasn’t Yet Been Confirmed By Marvel Studios

Harry Styles as Eros at the end of Eternals

While it would be great to see the Eternals show up in any number of these upcoming or potential MCU projects, the best place for their story to continue would be in a direct sequel to Eternals. Marvel Studios’ Eternals 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed, but there have been rumors suggesting the project is in development, which could mark the return of the remaining Eternals team, answer questions concerning Harry Styles’ Eros and see the Celestial Arishem make his judgment on Earth. A direct sequel to Eternals may seem unlikely after recent developments, but anything is possible in the MCU.
