Anthony Starr’s performance as Homelander in The Boys, cemented the character as one of the most devious villains in television and cinema, possibly putting the character in the same league as Darth Vader and Hannibal Lecter. This has caused a lot of fans to cast Starr in a slew of other roles in upcoming and up-and-coming franchises, including James Gunn’s DCU and HBO’s ever-expanding world of A Song of Ice and Fire.
If not Reverse Flash, Anthony Starr should play Maegor the Cruel
Game of Thrones might have ended, but the world of A Song of Ice and Fire is expanding. As of the writing of this article, The House of the Dragon is airing its second season, and another spin-off based on the history of the world, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has entered its production phase. A slew of other shows are in various stages of development, exploring the vast lands and history of A Song of Ice and Fire. A show about Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen king, is also in production. Fans wish that Anthony Starr plays Maegor the Cruel, the son of Aegon and his elder sister, Visenya.
In fact, there is a lot in common between Maegor the Cruel and Starr’s break-out role Homelander, as both are more or less the cruelest of the cruel in their respective universes. Maegor the Cruel took the sword at the young age of three, wherein he immediately slaughtered a cat.
Maegor was also responsible for mutilating the servants around the house, finding himself knighted at the age of 16. Maegor came to the Iron Throne after the death of the brother Aenys, whose son he challenged for the throne. The murder of his nephew is what earned Maegor the title of Maegor the Cruel.
Much like Homelander, who is known to take extreme steps to consolidate his power in whichever way necessary, Maegor would be a perfect fit for Anthony Starr. The character may be slightly more nuanced than the leader of The Seven, but has just enough gaps in his personality that Starr could reinvent it as Tom Glynn-Carney has done with Aegon the Elder in House of the Dragon.
If the DCU has an Eobard Thawne, not casting The Boys’ Anthony Starr would be a tragedy
Eobard Thawne is one of the few villains in the DC Universe who are as utterly psychopathic as Reverse Flash. From manipulating timelines to personally seeing multiple tragedies in Barry Allen’s life, Eobard Thawne is a role that Anthony Starr would shine in without a doubt. Again, a character with a slew of similarities to Homelander, the Reverse Flash needs all the dangerous personality that is projected by him, while requiring none of the facade that kept the former in check in the public eye.
Previously slated as the main antagonist of the DCEU by Zack Snyder, the character is yet to get his place in the DCU. It is unknown where the Flash is going to show up in James Gunn’s new DC film franchise, but Anthony Starr getting the role would be nothing short of the best casting that we have seen in comic book films since Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther. Of course, if this character is not on the cards Starr, HBO should immediately book the actor for the role of Maegor the Cruel.
