A new image from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has revealed a first look at a Dwarf previously seen in the appendices to J.R.R. Tolkien’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Rings of Power season 2 is going to expand upon Middle-earth, introducing familiar faces like Sauron’s Elf disguise Annatar and the mysterious Tom Bombadil to the TV show’s story. A bigger focus is also going to be on the Dwarves this season, with promotional material already confirming that King Durin III ends up with Rings forged by Sauron.

Now, Entertainment Weekly has released a new image of an upcoming Dwarf character, Narvi, who will be introduced in The Rings of Power season 2. The character was previously seen in The Lord of the Rings‘ appendices, and will be featured as an ally of King Durin. Check out both the image, and what actor Kevin Eldon, who portrays the new Dwarf, has to say about his role in the upcoming episodes below:He’s weaving in and out of the action throughout the season. He’s only mentioned in Tolkien’s appendices, and he’s described as a great craftsman. [Showrunners] J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay had little to go on, but I think we have successfully turned this footnote into a flesh-and-blood character. As well as being this fantastic architect, we see in season 2 that he’s an adviser as well. He’s a right-hand man of King Durin.

What Role Will Narvi Have In The Rings Of Power Season 2?

Later in his interview, Eldon revealed his deeper role in season 2’s story, as Narvi will have to navigate his loyalty to King Durin once he begins falling under the influence of Sauron’s Rings. This highlights how much more important Khazad-dûm is going to be in season 2, with the city possibly suffering greatly once the Rings start heavily impacting their leader. While established characters in The Rings of Power will likely try to figure out how to stop the king’s darker decisions, the new Dwarf seems like he’ll be a core deciding factor in how the story plays out.

In Tolkein’s appendices, Narvi is described as a friend to Celebrimbor, something that will likely be what draws him into the story for the upcoming episodes. The Rings of Power season 1 ended with the Elven smith forging the first three Rings while Sauron is under the guise of Halbrand. This indicates that, when the Dark Lord returns as Annatar, he will convince the Elf to forge Rings that will likely go to the Dwarves. It’s even possible Narvi acts as a liaison between both groups, perhaps becoming the reason King Durin gets them in the first place.

If the new Dwarf truly does have a role to play in delivering the Rings to King Durin, then he may decide to betray him once the objects start influencing him negatively. This would make him a key part of the story for The Rings of Power season 2, possibly catapulting him into a bigger role as the series continues. With his first appearance closing in soon, it won’t be long before it’s clearer what part he’ll play in everything about to happen in Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins August 29, 2024 on Prime Video.
