Jake Paul is one of the most discussed and debated figures in the sport of boxing.
After making his entry into the sport against a fellow content creator and bringing a large audience with him, the brash American star took to fighting former UFC fighters, beating the likes of Tyron Woodley, Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva.
He bounced back from his sole defeat against Tommy Fury by fighting low level boxers in Andre August and Ryan Bourland before signing up his most controversial opponent yet – Mike Tyson.
The 58-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion caused extreme worry in the boxing community by taking the fight on pro rules, albeit a soft version, but lasted the distance with Paul, 27, and lost by wide unanimous decision.
Post-fight, many big names in the sport – Carl Froch, Oscar De La Hoya, James Toney – said the fight was ‘scripted.’ Paul’s promotional company, MVP, branded the accusations ‘illogical, inane, naive and an insult.’
Despite the staunch defence, there are still some who believe the fight was more entertainment than competition, including Bernard Hopkins.
‘The Executioner’ – who made history in 2011 when a win over Jean Pascal for the light-heavyweight title made him the oldest world champion in the sport at 46 – told Fino Boxing that, should he face Paul, as soon as he was hit it would become ‘a real problem.’
“I’m not a script player real well. Whether it’s Jake Paul or anybody else that’s into entertainment boxing, it’ll be a real problem. They’ll get a real fight out of me. As soon as I get hit I’m gonna lose the script.”
Hopkins is unlikely to step back through the ropes, content at 59 to work on the promotional side through Golden Boy. As for Paul, he is expected to announce his next move soon.
