The Night Agent season 3 will change everything, revealing a unique cast and plot

The Night Agent Season 3

The Night Agent Season 3 is already in the works. The third season was confirmed by Netflix before Season 2 was dropped, so fans won’t have to wait too long for another season. Season 2, as promised, has given fans a new storyline. Rose and Peter found their way back to each other for another mission. However, Peter is committed to his work as a Night Agent, even though it means making difficult decisions and doing things that are against his own moral standards.

Rose, on the other hand, doesn’t want any part to play in the dangerous game. The season left them parted while on the discovery of a new conspiracy. The big bads are already revealed, but there are still a lot of unknowns about Season 3.

Filming had already begun for The Night Agent Season 3 in Istanbul at the end of 2024. The writers’ room is still working on the script, so fans won’t have to wait another two or three years for another season. New York will be another shooting location, but according to showrunner Shawn Ryan, they are still writing the last batch of episodes.

“Even though we’ve started shooting it, we haven’t finished writing it yet,” he told Deadline. “We’re still writing the last couple of episodes, we’ll have them done before we start shooting the New York portion of our filming, which begins February 3.”

Due to the state of the script, many questions viewers have about the returning cast will be determined by how the story will go. The big picture also plays a role in this, but for now, the series will have to deal with uncertainty. For now, no one knows how many seasons The Night Agent will get in total. Even though Netflix renewed Seasons 2 and 3 together, more seasons are dependent on the audience’s interest, especially because the series was initially designed to be a limited one-season show.

The Night Agent Season 2 finale has given fans some idea about where Season 3 is going. Peter, after stealing a piece of intelligence from the UN, is now working as a double agent to investigate his new boss, Jacob Monroe, who was revealed to be working with the presidential candidate, Governor Hagan. The piece of information Peter stole forced CIA Director Patrick Knox to withdraw from the election, swaying the result in Hagan’s favor. Peter has a lot to think about, and events in Season 2 are going to have an impact on his decisions and actions in Season 3. Given that Catherine is Peter’s handler in Season 2, and the person who gave him the mission, it’s likely that fans will be able to see Amanda Warren reprising her role in the upcoming season. It’s safe to assume that Louis Herthum will return as Jacob Monroe and Ward Horton will have more appearances as Governor Hagan; but so far, Gabriel Basso is the only confirmed returning cast member.

It’s slightly less comforting that Ryan’s answer to the question of whether Luciane Buchanan’s Rose will be back is “We’ll see.” It almost seems like a certainty that Rose is needed in Season 3. She has become a crucial part of The Night Agent, even though the show is called “The Night Agent,” meaning Peter and what he does.

Season 1 saw Rose in a less important role than Peter, but in Season 2, it becomes obvious that Peter needs her in his life, and their connection is what makes the series a really strong offering. “What I will say is that I don’t view this the way that I guess a lot of TV shows operate in that I think characters come and go and then come back to the show, depending on what the storyline for that season is,” Ryan said. Instead of keeping the characters together each season, the series is story-driven, and each season will have its own storyline, which then will decide the characters that the show will need.

It’s a fine line to juggle between what the story calls for and what the series needs. With that being said, even though there’s uncertainty around Rose’s fate, it’s very likely that The Night Agent won’t move forward with Season 3 without her.

“We don’t want to artificially create a situation where characters have to be part of a specific season on a regular basis. We want to tell the story that feels true in that moment,” Ryan said. However, he also recognizes the strength of keeping Rose in the ongoing storyline: “I am very aware that one of the big strengths of Season 1 — and what I think is a big strength in Season 2 — are Peter and Rose together. I think the relationship is really strong.”

The two seasons have mainly focused on the duo. In Season 1, Rose comes to Peter’s protection, and he aids her in the mission to dig out the truth. In The Night Agent Season 2, Rose comes to Peter’s rescue when he’s getting into a dark place due to isolation. However, they are also walking in different lanes. Rose can’t really stomach the deception and lies Peter’s job calls for, and even though Peter wants her to be a part of it, it’s too dangerous. As long as Rose is involved, she’ll always be in danger, and as for what Rose wants, she wants to go home and be happy.

How Did Season 2 Leave Peter?

Peter is not in a good spot. The Season 2 finale might be the darkest moment in his career. Not only has he done something terrible, but he has to face the consequences. That means Peter might have an entirely different outlook in Season 3. “In that final episode, as he referred to when he finds out what some of the unintended consequences were of his actions, I think he feels a great deal of guilt and responsibility that I think will carry us into Season 3 for him to try to make up for that,” Ryan told EW.

Peter almost lost himself in Season 2, being changed by the job, but where that would leave him in Season 3 is an interesting question that fans will have to wait and see the answer to. “I think one of Peter’s great superpowers is his conscience, his ability to know the difference between what’s morally right, morally wrong. That became more difficult in Season 2,” the showrunner discussed. That’s where Rose came in. “He’s someone, especially with Rose’s help and his conversations with her, who’s trying to figure out what you do when there’s no good choice.” He made some bad choices in Season 2, and it serves as “his starting point” for Season 3.

The Night Agent Season 3 Will Have a New Cast

Jason Monroe and Hagan aren’t the only things to look forward to in Season 3. According to Ryan, the new season will explore a new storyline in ways that the audience won’t expect. Similar to the Noor storyline in Season 2 which has no connection with Season 1, Season 3 also has something that will feature fresh storylines and new cast members.

I don’t view it as one extended season that’s being divided into two seasons, I view it as one specific story that ends but has some consequences to how Peter ended it that he’ll have to clean up as part of Season 3.

In terms of the lingering storyline from the explosive Season 2 ending, Ryan says that it’s more like a mess that Peter will have to clean up. “I don’t view it as one extended season that’s being divided into two seasons, I view it as one specific story that ends but has some consequences to how Peter ended it that he’ll have to clean up as part of Season 3,” the showrunner explained.

Per Deadline’s report, David Lyons is set to play a former spy being pulled out of retirement, Jennifer Morrison will play the First Lady, Stephen Moyer is playing a top hitman, and Genesis Rodriguez will play a reporter in the new season. Suraj Sharma and Callum Vinson are also set to join The Night Agent.

Fans can also expect to see some familiar faces. One The Night Agent Season 1 star is set to return. As teased in the Season 2 finale, Chelsea is working Hagan’s security detail. With Peter moving toward the White House, it’s only a matter of time before the two will come face to face with each other.

The showrunner has confirmed Chelsea’s return. He initially wanted to have her back in Season 2, but the plot in the second season didn’t give him the chance; so instead, he found a window to bring her back in Season 3. With that being said, many fan-favorite characters could come and go as The Night Agent progresses. Even if they may not be in the next season, it doesn’t mean they won’t come back. In the big picture, they all live in the same world and their stories are connected in an intricate way.
