The Dursleys reveal 3 gifts for Harry Potter and it’s a surprisingly subtle reference to “someone who shouldn’t have been born”

The Dursleys try to find out what is wrong with Dudley - Order of the Phoenix

It’s important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. CBR supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love, and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find CBR’s continuing coverage of Rowling here.

The Harry Potter series is one of the best stories there’s ever been, which is why Warner Bros. is looking to adapt it once again for a new generation of fans. Perhaps the biggest draw of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series is the opportunity to include aspects from the books that couldn’t make it to the films. The Harry Potter films are just as much an achievement as J.K. Rowling’s seven novels. Yet, in addition to cutting out storylines and characters from the books, the Harry Potter films were also coming out as the novels were, so there were times when the ending to the story couldn’t be set up as well as it could’ve. It wasn’t until after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix film in 2007 that Warner Bros. had a clear idea of the story’s future.

HBO’s Harry Potter series will have the opportunity to not only include far more from Rowling’s books but also have the chance to set up some major storylines that occur later on in the series, such as Severus Snape’s love for Lily Potter, Voldemort’s return, Dumbledore’s brother and more. There’s also another major aspect of the Harry Potter series the HBO adaptation can tease in a fun way based on a popular fan theory.

What Are the Deathly Hallows?

The Major Role They Play in the Series

Harry Potter is a descendant of the Peverell brothers, who initially possessed the Deathly Hallows.
In the final book of the series, Harry Potter possessed all three Deathly Hallows.

Leading up to the release of the Deathly Hallows book, one of the biggest questions surrounding it was what the true meaning behind the title was. The Deathly Hallows turned out to play a key role in Harry’s defeat of Voldemort and had its first proper introduction in the final book of the series. The tale told in the novel is about three brothers from the Peverell family who tried to escape death and used three magical objects created by it to do so. One brother received the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in the world, and the only way it could truly work is if the wizard using it is disarmed. The next Deathly Hallow object is the Resurrection Stone, which allows a wizard to communicate with loved ones from the dead. The final Deathly Hallow is the Cloak of Invisibility, an item Harry had since his first year after his father passed it down to him thanks to his ancestral ties to the Peverell brothers.

The final Deathly Hallow is the Cloak of Invisibility, an item Harry had since his first year after his father passed it down to him thanks to his ancestral ties to the Peverell brothers.

In Harry’s first year, the Durselys sent him tissue paper. For Harry’s fourth year, he received a toothpick. The last gift Harry got from the Dursleys for Christmas was a 50-pence coin. On the surface, these gifts from the Dursleys are as bad as they seem and are another example of how little they care or think of Harry. However, a Reddit user discovered there is a hidden meaning with each object since they represent the Deathly Hallows. The tissue paper Harry received during his first year represents the Cloak of Invisibility. Harry’s toothpick gift signifies the Elder Wand and the 50-pence coin lines up with the Resurrection Stone. This clever piece of foreshadowing from Rowling teases the three magical Deathly Hallow objects Harry eventually possesses to take down Voldemort.

Other Foreshadowing in the Harry Potter Series

J.K. Rowling Left Many Clues

Tom Riddle's diary on a desk in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Barty Crouch, Jr. disguised as Moody, flicking his tongue in Harry Potter Alan Rickman as Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Peter Pettigrew looks creepy and waves in the Harry Potter movies. Harry and Hermione use the time turner, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Tom Riddle's diary on a desk in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and Hermione use the time turner, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Each Harry Potter installment featured a surprising twist teased earlier on in the story.
J.K. Rowling also left clues for larger story points, such as the Horcruxes and Deathly Hallows throughout Harry’s journey.

While the Christmas gifts from the Dursleys having a hidden Deathly Hallows meaning remain a fan theory, it also wouldn’t be the first time Rowling clearly teased the events of the later books in the series in earlier books. The majority of the Harry Potter entries each featured a surprising twist, and those surprises didn’t just happen out of nowhere. For instance, in The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry notices Peter Pettigrew on the Marauder’s Map but never runs into him because he’s in his rat form at the time. In Goblet of Fire, Barty Crouch Jr. has a noticeable twitch with his tongue that Mad-Eye Moody does throughout the film since it’s Crouch Jr., who used Polyjuice Potion to become the Auror.

There are plenty of other examples of foreshadowing in the series, such as the set up of the Horcruxes happening back in the Chamber of Secrets, with Tom Riddle’s diary being one of them, and the eventual reveal of Harry being Voldemort’s accidental Horcrux that gave the two a connection for so long. The Harry Potter series was masterfully throughout by Rowling and it all comes together better than most stories. There are numerous cases of Rowling mapping out the story early on, and the Christmas gifts from the Dursleys could easily be another clue left by the author.

The Harry Potter books are incredibly dense and full of details that enrich the Wizarding World and provide fun clues for pivotal moments that occur later on. The Deathly Hallows ultimately assisted Harry throughout his years at Hogwarts thanks to the Cloak of Invisibility. However, it wasn’t until the final book that it was clear what the significance of the cloak was. Dumbledore’s wand would also go on to play a major role in the story since he owned the Elder Wand for years after his defeat of Gellert Grindelwald. Lastly, the Ressurection Stone allowed Harry to communicate with all the loved ones he lost along the way and allowed him to accept death, something Voldemort couldn’t do.

The Harry Potter films did the best they could with the limited runtimes to foreshadow as much as possible, but the release of the books also kept the filmmakers from knowing the complete story. HBO’s Harry Potter series had the chance to set up major moments better than the films with the benefit of hindsight, and one fun detail it can include, starting in the first season, are the Dursley Christmas gifts, which appear to have far more meaning than what many probably thought.
