The departure of a real character could have been completely avoided in ‘The Night Agent’ season 2 if this were changed

After a two-year hiatus, Netflix’s The Night Agent Season 2 made its premiere on January 23, 2025. Since its release, the season has gone down the same path as its predecessor, sitting comfortably atop Netflix’s charts. Given the anticipation with which fans were looking forward to the second season, this is perhaps not a surprise. However, what did come as a surprise were the multiple twists and turns in the second season which ended up in character deaths, the most unfortunate, perhaps, being the death of Farhad Taheri, the brother of Noor Taheri.

Season 2 of the series sees Peter enter the international sphere, dealing with foes of multiple nationalities. After foiling the assassination attempt against President Travers in Season 1, Peter is officially recruited as a Night Agent and sent out on his first mission. However, nothing is ever smooth sailing for Peter, and the same was true of the agent’s mission in Season 2. His partner, Alice, is killed, and Peter goes off the grid, getting entangled in matters that have global consequences. One such consequence is the death of Farhad, a character who is killed in Iran.

How Did Farhad Die in ‘The Night Agent’?

Farhad Taheri was the brother of Noor Taheri, a low-level aide at the Iranian Mission to the United Nations in New York. Noor leaks classified information from the Mission to the Americans in the hopes of securing asylum for her family. However, when the extraction mission is finally carried out, the unthinkable happens. Her brother is killed.

When Sami, the Night Agent assigned to extract Noor’s family, arrives at their family home in Iran, he learns that Noor’s mother has not informed Farhad of their extraction. Slapped in the face with the news that they will be escaping to America immediately, Farhad puts up a fight and refuses, even dragging his neighbors and, inadvertently, the police into the matter.

Although Noor ultimately manages to convince Farhad to leave, the damage is already done. The police are in pursuit of Sami, Farhad, and their mother, Azita. Making matters even worse, Farhad changes his mind mid-journey and demands to be dropped off. He makes use of a distraction offered by the police and pulls a gun on Sami in a final attempt to stay back. Despite Sami’s attempts to calm him down, Farhad fires. Sami, too, fires in retaliation, and the shot proves fatal, instantly killing Farhad.

The Consequences of Farhad’s Death in ‘The Night Agent’

Farhad’s death, although not altering the narrative of The Night Agent in a momentous manner, does have an impact on Noor’s relationship with Peter and his team. Peter hides Farhad’s death from her to ensure that she hands over the information. In doing so, he blatantly lies to her face, assuring her that both Azita and Farhad got on the plane with Sami. Rose, too, despite her moral dilemma, tells Noor that her brother was simply injured in the extraction and not killed.

Noor only uncovers the truth when called to identify the body of her brother at the Iranian Mission. This only results in increasing her mistrust of the Americans. Noor instantly understands that she was deceived by Peter, Rose and Catherine to ensure she would not back out of providing them with the stolen intelligence.

Farhad’s death also reveals a different side of Peter. Season 1 of the series depicted Peter as an individual with high moral standards and principles. However, Season 2 portrays him in a different light, and the manner in which he handles Farhad’s death becomes a good example. His deception of Noor makes it evident that Peter considers his mission much more important than what might be morally correct. In an interview with TVLine prior to the release of the season, series creator Shawn Ryan confirmed that viewers would see Peter tackle “morally queasy” situations in Season 2.

“We learn through the book that Peter’s a very moral guy, a very principled guy, and he’s going to do the right thing. So, we endeavored hard in Season 2 to try to make it much more difficult for him to know what the right thing to do was, to struggle with that. We see [in one of the episodes] that it sickens him to tell a lie, but he has to do it for the greater good. Taking a very principled character and putting him in a job that is very morally queasy was something that felt like a good evolution in Season 2”

Could Farhad’s Death Have Been Avoided in ‘The Night Agent’?

Farhad’s death occurs in the most unfortunate way. A series of events, beginning with the rushed extraction plan and ending with Sami’s fatal shot, results in his death. Given that Farhad’s death did not alter the season’s narrative in a major way, the question of whether Farhad actually had to die arises. Would it not have been a more heartfelt moment if Noor had been able to reunite with both her mother and brother in America after all the risks she had taken for them?

There are a few ways in which Farhad’s death could have been avoided. Azita could have informed him of the plan early on, ensuring that he was ready when Sami arrived at their doorstep. Farhad could have also been more rational, understanding the reasoning behind Noor’s decision to have them extracted from Iran. Failing both of these, Sami, as a trained Night Agent, could have taken a less fatal shot, injuring Farhad but not killing him.

Any such variation could have led to a happier, more fortunate outcome. However, this is not to say any one person is to blame for Farhad’s death. Each had their own motivation in acting the way they did, even Sami, who instinctively fired to kill. The various ways in which Farhad’s death could have been avoided and the fact that the character’s death did not have a significant impact on the show’s storyline make Farhad’s death the most unfortunate in The Night Agent Season 2. Farhad’s death is the outcome of a series of worst possible scenarios becoming a reality. The Night Agent is streaming on Netflix.
