The Boys Showrunner Explores the Potential for a Comprehensive Crossover with Gen V: What Fans Can Expect

Fans want to see the supes from The Boys and Gen V on one screen. However, showrunner Eric Kripke has no plans for a “full” crossover.

The Boys, which premiered in July 2019, became a huge hit due to its humor, heart, craziness and character development. The viewers loved it so much that it spawned two spinoffs, Gen V, which debuted in 2023, and the animated anthology, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, released in March 2022. The showrunners have successfully brought both into the consciousness of The Boys Season 4, with the latter giving fans clues into Billy Butcher’s fate and the former building up anticipation for a potent virus. There are no more Diabolical seasons in the work, but fans want to see the characters in The Boys and Gen V together. However, Kripke is seemingly not on board with the much-talked team-up of the supes from the two shows.

In Variety’s Showrunners Sitdown, before the fourth season of The Boys premiered, Kripke addressed the possibility of a true crossover. Unfortunately, fans might not like his response. Kripke said, “I like the idea that there’s strands and Easter eggs that kind of pop back and forth, but full team up — no. I live in total fear of this notion that you have to watch both of them to understand the other one.” Kripke added that he didn’t want to force the audience to watch both shows. He understands that some might want to watch The Boys but not Gen V or vice versa. So, they wanted to keep the two shows independent from each other. Kripke added, “They’re each their own story. They each have their own reason for being. They each need to be good enough to exist without the other one existing. But I’m not giving the audience homework.”

The Boys Spinoff Gen V Release Date

Meanwhile, some stars from The Boys were hopeful they would appear in Gen V in the future. Erin Moriarty, who plays Annie January/Starlight and Karen Fukuhara, who portrays Kimiko Miyashiro/The Female, teased about their characters potentially appearing in the spinoff. “Yes, I’ve already talked to [showrunner Eric] Kripke about it,” Fukuhara told The Direct. “I don’t know how, but I think Frenchie and Kimiko need to make an appearance somehow. I mean, they must be on a mission somewhere in that world, right?” Moriarty also said she would love to be in Gen V and she was convinced Kripke would make it possible. She said, “Eric is going to sprinkle in those characters [but] not just to get people to watch it. It’s never going to be arbitrary – it’s going to be purposeful.”

Although Kripke seems to have no plans for a full Gen V and The Boys team-up, a crossover is still possible. Moriarty and Fukuhara believe their characters can appear in the spinoff not just to appeal to the viewers to watch both programs but for a purpose. A crossover between parent and spinoff series is typical, especially in superhero programs, so this could happen, especially since the parent series is already down to its last season. Also, several characters from The Boys had already appeared in Gen V. When the spinoff aired its first three episodes on Amazon, at least seven characters from The Boys were spotted, including A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), The Deep (Chace Crawford), Adam Bourke (P.J. Byrne), Love Sausage (Derek Johns), Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue), Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie), and a not-so-known Vanessa (Alexandra Castillo).

Gen V was renewed for a second season and is currently in production while The Boys Season 4 just wrapped up its finale and penultimate season. Gen V Season 2 could air next year, so fans should wait and see for the potential crossover and if Moriarty and Fukuhara will be there.

The Boys and Gen V streams on Prime Video.
