It’s all for the better.
Even though fans of The Boys have become so used to chaos and mayhem, the production team has not run out of ways to surprise and impress them. Not many shows can bring back their actors after they have been officially killed off on screen, but nothing is impossible for The Boys, and Eric Kripke has just proven that once again.
The reveal of the newly recruited Black Noir left viewers speechless and is now competing for the title of one of the most iconic scenes of season 4. Here’s how his return came around.
Who Plays the New Black Noir in The Boys?
The real twist to the death of the Black Noir in season 3 was his comeback in season 4. What made it so unexpected and exciting at the same time was the fact that the actor who portrayed the hero all this time remained the same. The viewers just didn’t get to see his face for a long time, but now things have changed.
Things have also changed for the actual actor behind the role of supe, Nathan Mitchell. Like everyone else, he did not see his own death coming and had quite an emotional reaction to it. However, he was quickly offered the opportunity to return for another season, this time in a new version of his own character.
In an interview with TV Insider, Mitchell reflected on the moment he received the news:
“When I first got the news, my heart dropped. <…> And then I took a day and [decided I] should be the new Noir. So I took a day or two to mourn old Noir and accepted [the] new Noir. And it’s been so much fun,” the actor said.
Of course, it must be an intense acting challenge to return to the exact same role, but as a paid actor who has to imitate it. However, being an in-universe actor has allowed Nathan Mitchell to bring some of the practices and quirks of his real-life job to his character.
Viewers appreciated the smart casting move as well, as they were happy to finally see Black Noir’s face on their screens. It’s not the first time that The Boys deliberately messes with its audience’s brains, but this might be one of the smartest ways to do it.
If you are interested in seeing what Black Noir 2.0 has in store for the future of The Boys, be sure to tune in to Amazon Prime Video every Thursday to not miss another episode of season 4.
