Sweet Magnolias season four left fans of the Netflix drama with several questions and now they’re wondering if there will be a fifth series – here’s everything we know so far.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Sweet Magnolias.
Sweet Magnolias season four had an ending that fans weren’t expecting, with the futures of many Serenity residents now in question. The beloved drama, based on Sheryl Woods’ best-selling novels, returned to Netflix for its fourth season earlier this month following a two-year break.
The return was marked by an unexpected time jump and the shocking off-screen death of Bill Townsend (Chris Klein), who suffered a heart attack while visiting his parents in Texas.
His death set the stage for the rest of the Serenity residents to contemplate their futures, including his ex-wife Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher).
By the end of the season, Maddie had not only married Cal (Justin Bruening) but also accepted a publishing job in New York, leaving viewers on a cliffhanger.

Sweet Magnolias season 5
As of now, there’s no word from Netflix about a fifth season of Sweet Magnolias.
However, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of the show returning, as the cast and crew are hopeful for more seasons.
Showrunner Sheryl J Anderson expressed her deep hope for a fifth season during a Tudum interview, hinting at more storylines to come.
She went on to say: “The reason we even raised the question here at the end of season 4 was because we feel so many women are confronted with, ‘Am I allowed to put myself first this one time?’
“And how complicated it is for somebody like Maddie, with a new marriage, with kids still in the house, with dear, dear friends that you have seen every day your entire life.
“She’s so deeply woven into the community. Does that mean she has to say no to a dream.”

Helen star Heather Headley also expressed her hopes for more episodes after season four concluded with her character and Erik (Dion Johnstone) announcing their engagement, something that “everybody’s kind of been waiting for”.
She told Parade: “It’s been years in the making. And so I think it would be a beautiful celebration… and because it’s Helen, and she’s the one who likes the clothes and all that kind of stuff, it should be quite the wedding.”
But as Netflix hasn’t renewed Sweet Magnolias just yet, Headley is aware that it “could be” the end “if it needed to be”.
There is plenty of potential for the show to return as it is based on Woods’ books, which consist of 11 novels, providing ample inspiration for future storylines.
If Sweet Magnolias were to be given the go-ahead for a fifth season, its release date remains uncertain.
Both series two and four had a two-year gap between them, and the show doesn’t follow a consistent pattern in terms of its release month.
However, with the show’s creators and stars keen for more, a dedicated fanbase, and plenty of storylines left to explore, it seems the adventures aboard Serenity are far from over.
Sweet Magnolias is available to watch on Netflix.
