The Boys‘ Susan Heyward shares her thoughts on what her character, Sister Sage, has in store for Phase Two. Sage tells Homelander to prepare for Phase Two during The Boys season 4 ending after informing him that he now has control of the United States via the newly installed President Calhoun. With Phase One of Sage’s grand plan completed in season 4, season 5 will see the execution of Phase Two, although it is unconfirmed what this will entail.

While speaking with TVLine, Heyward teased several ideas of what Phase Two will be based on her portrayal of Sage in season 4 and on what has been revealed thus far about the character. This includes a wide range of scenarios that could see Sage fulfilling a variety of roles in season 5. However, Heyward confirmed that she does not yet know what showrunner Eric Kripke and the writers have planned and is only speculating for now. Read Heyward’s comments below:

In a very Sage-like way, I have all of these different versions in my head. I have the version in my head where she goes for world domination. I have the version in my head where she flips and shows herself to be a champion of humanity, and she’s been just positioning herself to protect humanity this whole time. I have a version in my head where she’s a complete agent of chaos and just likes to keep pushing the table over. All of those sound fun to me as an actress. I’m open to all of them. But the writers’ room is open right now. I will find out probably when I arrive to set, and things will probably change again then. So I guess the answer to your question is, I hope it will reflect the world back to itself, clearly, and I know it’s going to be fun to play. I’m grateful.

What Are Sage’s Intentions For Phase Two?

She Is Unlikely To Reveal Herself As Humanity’s Saving Grace

Phase Two will more likely see Sage continuing down the path of global domination or simply being an agent of chaos as she uses her unparalleled intelligence to make the world suffer.

The mystery behind Sage’s next steps and her ultimate endgame arguably makes her an even more compelling character than Homelander, whose villainous intentions have always been clear. Sage treated Phase One like a game, using Homelander, the rest of the Seven, the Boys, and everyone else as pieces that she subtly moved around to put her hypotheses into action and to see if she could bend the world to her will. If this trajectory continues, she will continue to use Homelander as a weapon to make humanity suffer as her theories continue to be actualized on a global scale.

Heyward’s suggestion that Sage may be playing a long game to protect or champion humanity is intriguing, and it would be satisfying to see her sweep the rug out from Homelander’s feet when he thinks he is at the pinnacle of his power and has achieved everything he ever wanted. This seems unlikely, though, as Sage has never exhibited a desire for public attention or approval, or has she demonstrated compassion for the masses. It would be a surprising plot twist, but would not feel consistent with what was established for the character in season 4.

The Boys cannot overpower Homelander, but they also cannot outsmart Sage, making them outmatched in season 5. As The Boys nears its conclusion, the titular group will need more than Billy Butcher’s new supe powers to contend with Sage and the dangers of Phase Two.
