Mayor Trent Lewis had resigned from office in Sweet Magnolias Season 3 as he wished to avoid a recall vote. This was because he was revealed to have been using the town funds for his own selfish purposes.

The recall vote was a result of a petition filed by Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, who were frustrated with Serenity’s citizens struggling immensely as a result of Lewis’ greed and mismanagement of the town.

The recall effort was initially unsuccessful and backfired on the trio, with Cal, Maddie’s love interest, getting fired from his job. This was after Trent Lewis’ wife made his arrest for battery and assault public. She did so in order to curb any backlash the Mayor could face.

However, Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen were eventually successful with the recall vote. This was after Peggy Martin did some investigation. She found evidence of Trent Lewis’ financial misconduct, which she then exposed to the public. This led to his resignation as Mayor, by which, he also managed to avoid imprisonment.

Following Lewis’ arrest, Peggy Martin steps into the role of Mayor in Season 4. The third season’s finale teased this development when Helen told her that she was a good fit for the role. Additionally, she even offered to be Martin’s campaign manager.
