Few artists bring the world to a halt when they drop an album and Eminem is still one of them since breaking through in 1999 with The Slim Shady LP.
Earlier this week, Eminem dropped The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). In it, not one but two former Texas A&M Aggies quarterbacks receive unique shoutouts: Johnny Manziel and Kellen Mond.
Manziel was the first to receive a mention as he was brought up in one of the two singles released before the full album went live. In “Tobey,” it’s Eminem himself who brings up Johnny Football.
Em fittingly brings up Manziel when discussing things not panning out quite as expected, which was the quarterback’s case upon arriving at the NFL level, where he never delivered on the hype following a historic collegiate career.
“I get on a beat and it’s like that “Eye of the Tiger” song is playin’ on my head on repeat,
I’ve been knocked down so many times, can’t count,
Sometimes, s–t does not pan out,
that’s just the way that the card hand’s dealt
Jon Manziel, odd man out.”
Manziel, who has been pretty open about his trajectory in football over the last few years, probably won’t take it as a slight but rather a cool shoutout by one of the greatest rappers of all time.
Meanwhile, Kellen Mond is also brought up on the album, but he’s shouted out by JID, who is featured with Eminem on what’s quickly stood out as one of the best songs on the album due to the high-level of rhyme schemes on the track named “Fuel.”
JID opens up the track and within seconds shouts out Mond while pointing out toward one of his biggest traits: His arm strength:
“In the pocket, the rocket like Kellen Mond,
Mama told me the power was in the tongue,
But it probably ain’t as powerful as a gun.”
Interestingly enough, the two born-in-Texas quarterbacks get shoutouts while no other QB is brought up in the album. Neither Eminem (Detroit) nor JID (Atlanta) are from Texas.
