Camille in Emily in Paris Season 4, Episode 5 Image for recap article

I am unsure why Netflix decided to split up Emily in Paris Season 4 as part of its release schedule. Regardless, the fourth season at the halfway mark is everything we expected. Episode 5, “Trompe l’oeil,” sees trouble for Camille, an untimely revelation for Gabriel, and a new skincare line catches everyone’s eye.

I’ve put together the four key moments from the mid-season finale:

There’s always a strange marketing campaign in Emily in Paris, and the madness does not slow down in Season 4.

Mindy’s friend wants to launch a skincare product, so she asks Emily to help market it via Agence Grateua. At first, this skincare looks revolutionary — “It makes you feel and look like you have glass skin.”

However, at the marketing event, it was revealed that the skincare is lube. Despite the shock, Emily can see the attendees’ excitement as they lavish it on their faces and believes they should raise the price.

Yes, I’m not sure how to think about this one.

Camille faces relationship trouble and an upsetting truth about her pregnancy

The romantic storylines in Emily in Paris continue to get more complex. Unsurprisingly, Sofia is not feeling entirely comfortable in her relationship with Gabriel. Plans to move in next door to him to plan for Camille’s baby are proving to raise tensions.

Don’t get me wrong — I understand the plans: Gabriel is the father, after all. But despite all this, Sofia is irked that Camille still has to be close to Gabriel.

Sofia leaves Paris for Athens and tells Camille she can join her whenever she’s ready. There’s a departing kiss, meaning there is still hope for this relationship.

It gets worse for Camille. After Sofia leaves the city, she learns she is not pregnant. It was a false positive. She has not told Gabriel yet about this devastating news.

This paves the way for the series to finally put Emily and Gabriel together for good. With Alfie out of the picture and Camille likely to chase Sofia in Athens, there’s no excuse for Emily and Gabriel — they are free to be together.

Marianne is ousted for not being a Michelin Star Inspector

Sylvie wants a special dinner for Laurent for his birthday and asks Luc to organize a meal. And so he does, and during the meal, he asks for a raise, which shocks Sylvie, as this is clearly not the time or place. But then, Marianne defends Luc at the dinner table, highlighting how he deserves better pay.

However, Marianne is then ousted. Industry acquaintances nearby reveal that she is no longer a Michelin Star Inspector and has not been one for a while.

Luc is annoyed at Marianne for lying, but she tells him she wants to impress him. Despite the ramifications, Luc does not seem too bothered, which I’ll explain in the next key moment.

Gabriel may have Emily, but he is not getting that Michelin Star or that baby

Gabriel and Emily finally find a way to be together, which will please fans. But nothing is ever simple in Emily in Paris, and why would it be? In Episode 5, they tell each other they love each other in the beautiful Paris evening light. It feels like the series is coming to a happy conclusion.

However, later in the episode, Luc comes clean to Emily and tells her that Marianne is no longer a Michelin-starred Inspector and that she’s a fraud. Gabriel will not be getting his star for the restaurant.

Emily tells Gabriel the bad news, and it dawns on him that he’s wasted his time and money, and immediately fires the dessert chef.

He tries to put on a strong front for his restaurant customers and provides a free drink for everyone, but you cannot help but feel sorry for him.

At the end of Episode 5, Gabriel hugs Emily and Camile and tells them he’s the luckiest man alive. He explains how he has a great girlfriend and a baby on the way. I can understand why Camille has not told him that she is not pregnant immediately — having a career setback and finding out you are no longer a father in one evening would be an emotional nightmare.

But where this leads for Gabriel and Emily is another question, which will be answered in Part 2 of Season 4.
