We’d love to tell you that the iPhone 15 Pro Max — our current top pick as the best iPhone you can buy — is absolutely the model to get. But Apple just revamped its entire phone lineup, with new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. And until we spend more time with those devices our iPhone rankings remain up in the air.
Mind you, there’s plenty to like about the latest iPhones. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus jump to A18 chipsets that can power Apple Intelligence features coming to iPhones later this year. There are new Action and Camera Control buttons, too, which also appear on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Those Pro models get the biggest changes — quite literally, when we’re talking about their screens, as the iPhone 16 Pro Max now has a 6.9-inch panel. Cameras also get an overhaul on the iPhone 16 Pro models, too.
But the best thing about these new iPhones? They have the same starting price that their iPhone 15 equivalents had when they debuted last year.
Some of those iPhone 15 models are still part of Apple’s lineup, only now they cost less than before. So keep them in mind when shopping for a new iPhone if you don’t want to pay full price for a brand new flagship.
Look for our iPhone 16 reviews to appear shortly, at which time we’ll reassess our best iPhone listings. But until then, here’s how the phones compared prior to the iPhone 16’s arrival.

The best iPhone at the moment
The iPhone 15 Pro Max has been the best iPhone you can buy, sporting the biggest screen, most powerful chipset and best cameras, at least until the iPhone 16 Pro Max goes on sale. You’ll also appreciate the epic battery life for this model — along with its 5x zoom camera that gets you closer than ever before.

The best iPhone for most people
It may not generate the excitement of other recent models, but this iPhone is pretty affordable, especially now that the starting price has dropped to $699. It still offers solid cameras and strong performance courtesy of the A16 Bionic chipset.

Best battery life
There’s more than one way to get a 6.7-inch iPhone. Rather than pay up for the Max, the iPhone 15 Plus gives you the expansive screen real estate for a reduced price of $799. It actually has the longest battery life we’ve tested in an iPhone.
Best under $1,000

The best iPhone for under $1,000
If the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s price is too much, you could try the iPhone 15 Pro. It’s got many of the same features as the Max, with a smaller 6.1-inch display — but it also costs $200 less. Of course, the iPhone 16 Pro costs the same and has a bigger screen.
Budget big iPhone
5. iPhone 14 Plus
There’s still a choice for fans of big phones who happen to have a tighter budget. The iPhone 14 Plus starts at a modest $699, which nabs you a 6.7-inch iPhone that’s perfect to run Standby Mode and other features that look good on a big screen.
For bargain hunters
6. iPhone 14
A good iPhone at a discount
If the iPhone 15 doesn’t tickle your fancy, then consider the iPhone 14 now that it costs $599. The 2022 phone is still good enough for most tasks, and you won’t have to pay big bucks for a capable device. Not only is its smaller size easier on the hands, but it’s also available in several bright colors.
