John Wick’s story isn’t over!
On April 1, Lionsgate announced that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the seemingly unkillable hitman in John Wick: Chapter 5. The actor will be joined on set by the franchise’s veteran producers, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, and director Chad Stahelski.
“Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”
The theatrical release of John Wick: Chapter 4, which premiered in March 2023, featured an ending that alluded to Wick’s death — but Stahelski has since said that the final scene was purposefully ambiguous.
John Wick: Chapter 5 has been in the works for some time. Lionsgate confirmed the fifth installment back in 2020, per Deadline. However, Reeves, now 60, thought long and hard about returning as the legendary hitman.
“My knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,‘ he told CBS Mornings in December 2024. “My heart [wants to], but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”
Here’s everything we know so far about John Wick: Chapter 5, including plot details producers have hinted at.
How did John Wick: Chapter 4 end?
Halfway through John Wick: Chapter 4, the legendary hitman calls Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård) to a duel as he seeks to be released from all obligations to the High Table — a council of 12 crime lords that govern the underworld’s most powerful criminal organizations.
The Marquis accepts, and the two meet to determine the parameters of the duel. They settle on a pistol duel at sunrise at Paris’s Sacre Coeur. The “Old Ways” allow The Marquis to nominate another to duel in his place. He chooses Caine (Donnie Yen) and threatens to kill his daughter if he does not accept the task.
In the final minutes of the film, Wick and Caine climb the 222 steps to Sacre Coeur, where they arm themselves with pistols.
“Thirty paces. In the event that both parties survive, each will approach the other at increments of ten paces until only one remains,” the Harbinger (Clancy Brown) previously informed the men.
Wick and Caine walk their 30 paces and fire their guns. Both suffer non-lethal hits and move 10 paces closer. They reload and fire again with the same result. Now, just 10 paces away, they reload, and Cain fires, wounding Wick for a third time.
With Wick still alive, an impatient Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont swaps places with Caine to end the duel.
“You arrogant a——. He didn’t shoot,” Winston (Ian McShane) informs the Marquis before Wick puts a bullet in the High Table member’s head.

Having won the duel, Wick is free of all obligations to the High Table, as is Caine. Bleeding from three bullet wounds, Wick asks Winston to take him home to New York City.
John Wick: Chapter 4 ends with Winston and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) standing before Wick’s grave. “Farewell, my son,” Winston says, placing his hand on Wick’s headstone.
Unsure if John Wick: Chapter 5 would get made, Stahelski and Reeves left the ending of Chapter 4 up for interpretation.
“[The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending. We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive,” Stahelski told Empire in July 2023.
In an interview with Comic Book Movie, it was also pointed out that Wick’s pit bull seemed distracted by something (or someone) at the gravesite.
“Yes, that is a very deliberate shot with the dog. That’s meant, in my little mind, to [mess] with you a little bit, because ambiguity, like is he still [alive] or not?” Stahelski said.
What is John Wick: Chapter 5 about?
Lionsgate is keeping the plot details of John Wick: Chapter 5 under wraps for now.
In November 2023, producer Basil Iwanyk theorized that the fifth installment would feature a major time jump.
“If these movies were four chapters, the next John Wick will be another book. [John Wick: Chapter 5] won’t be like six months later from John Wick: Chapter 4,” he told Screen Rant.
Who is in the cast of John Wick: Chapter 5?
Keanu Reeves is back as John Wick. As for other returning cast members, none have been confirmed.
“There really is no other person that could play John Wick,” director Chad Stahelski told PEOPLE in October 2024. “He brings, obviously, the passion, the physicality, and there’s just this undeniable emotional quality to him, where you feel for him and he pulls at your heartstrings.”

Chad Stahelski has directed all four of the previous John Wick films, and Chapter 5 is no exception.
“I’m in love with John Wick. I’m in love with the process and the story,” he told Business Insider in October 2024.
Stahelski has been on the producing team of all the John Wick spinoffs to date — The Continental, a Peacock original TV series, and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which premieres in June 2025 and stars Ana de Armas. He is also set to produce the upcoming animated John Wick prequel film announced by Lionsgate in April 2025.
