💔 Teen Dies Protecting His Brother During Soccer Brawl—Then Police Revealed What Happened After The Attack That Left Him Fighting For His Life
Arizona Teen Beaten to Death Protecting His Brother During Park Soccer Match — Days Before Starting College
A 19-year-old Arizona man was fatally beaten after a neighborhood soccer game turned into a violent brawl, dying from his injuries just days before he was due to begin community college.
Tumusifu Bazirake was playing soccer with his brother and others against a group of strangers at Sueno Park in Phoenix on the evening of August 6, 2026. When the opposing players grew angry over losing the match, they launched an attack. Bazirake stepped in to protect his brother and was beaten unconscious. He died a week later, on August 13.
How the Fight Began
According to Bazirake’s brother, Jeanpaul, the confrontation started after their side scored and the other players became upset. “Then (they were) beating us, pushing us, cause we scored on them, and they got mad and all that,” Jeanpaul later told local media.
Jeanpaul said he blocked an initial punch before several players jumped on him. His older brother immediately intervened. “After (an opposing player) threw a punch, I blocked it. Then they just jumped on me, all of them. Then that’s when my brother jumped in, too,” he recalled.
What followed was a sustained assault lasting around 20 minutes. Jeanpaul described the horror of seeing his brother on the ground as the attackers continued to strike him. “I tried to turn around, then he was on the ground, and they were just stepping on him while he’s on the ground. Stepping, kicking, punching — all that.”
When the attackers realized Bazirake was unresponsive, they fled the park.
Medical Response and Death
Phoenix Fire Department personnel found Bazirake unconscious and transported him to a hospital in extremely critical condition. He never recovered. He died on August 13, prompting police to open a homicide investigation. His remains were turned over to the Office of the Medical Examiner, with the official cause of death pending autopsy results.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made and police have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.
Dreams Cut Short
Bazirake was scheduled to begin his first semester at community college on August 24. He had ambitions of becoming a firefighter after graduation, a goal his mother said reflected his desire to “help people.” She described her son as someone who adored school and valued his education.
The timing of his death — just days before the start of college — has compounded the family’s grief. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover funeral expenses so he could be “laid to rest with dignity, love, and respect.” The page noted the profound sorrow of losing a child and the difficult decisions the family now faces.
A Neighborhood Game Turns Deadly
Sueno Park, located about 10 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, is a public space where informal soccer games are common. What began as a casual match between local players and a group of strangers ended in a fatal beating. The fact that the violence erupted over the outcome of a recreational game has left many stunned.
Jeanpaul’s account portrays his brother as someone who acted instinctively to protect family. That decision cost him his life. The attackers’ decision to continue the assault after Bazirake was on the ground, and then to flee once he became unresponsive, forms a central part of the emerging narrative of the case.
Investigation Continues
Phoenix Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. Detectives will be examining witness statements, any available surveillance video from the park or surrounding area, and forensic evidence. The lack of immediate arrests suggests the suspects were not known to the victims and may have left the scene without being identified at the time.
For Bazirake’s family, the loss is immediate and devastating. A young man who was about to take the next step in his education and pursue a career in public service was instead killed in a park after trying to shield his brother. The investigation continues as the family prepares to bury him and as the community grapples with the senseless violence that ended his life.
