Recent developments in the MCU have made it prudent to explain all there is to know about Scarlet Witch‘s son, Wiccan. Marvel’s latest release on Disney Plus, Agatha All Along, is the second MCU production to build on the events of WandaVision after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw Wanda use the Darkhold to find a universe in which she could be with her children, Billy and Tommy. This goal was spurred by losing the two kids she had fabricated as part of the Westview Hex, which she dispelled after recognizing its inherent immorality.
Agatha All Along revisits the Westview residents and Agatha three years after the events of WandaVision. After being stripped of her powers by Wanda and condemned to a purgatorial existence as the only resident still under the effects of the hex, Agatha assembles a coven of witches to travel down the Witches’ Road, tackle its trials, and reacquire her power. As the latest addition to the mystical side of the MCU, and its association with Wanda Maximoff’s MCU story, now would be a prime time for Wiccan to reappear and be fully established in the MCU.
Wiccan’s Role In WandaVision Explained
Billy Maximoff Is Wanda’s Son And Boasts The Same Abilities As Wiccan
Wiccan is Billy Maximoff in WandaVision. While Billy never adopts the mantle specifically during the show, Billy Maximoff is also Wiccan in Marvel Comics, albeit as part of a convoluted story. WandaVision leaned into this link by having Billy don a relatively comic-accurate yet homemade version of Wiccan’s traditional costume in Marvel Comics as his Halloween costume in WandaVision episode 6, “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!“
Billy’s brother, Tommy, wears a costume that resembles a comic-accurate Quicksilver rather than Speed, although his casual attire more closely resembles his comic-book counterpart.
Billy Maximoff was created as part of Wanda’s Westview hex along with his brother, Tommy Maximoff, and his father, Vision. His very existence is a stark example of how powerful Wanda Maximoff is, as he, along with his hex-borne family, is composed of solid matter and can interact with the world around him – though his existence hinges on being confined to the hex zone surrounding Westview. This is tragically demonstrated by his apparent demise as Wanda dispels the hex and her fabricated family along with it.
Billy and Tommy live a relatively happy suburban childhood across six of the show’s nine episodes. After a swift pregnancy, Wanda gives birth to the twins with the help of Monica Rambeau (called “Geraldine” in Wanda’s hex) in episode 3, “Now in Color.” They then age rapidly twice within episode 5, “On a Very Special Episode….” The twins remain this age until they are banished along with the hex itself in “The Series Finale.”
Wiccan’s MCU Powers Explained
Young Wiccan Boasts An Impressive Array Of Magical Powers
Billy exhibits a similar power set to Wiccan from Marvel Comics, first manifesting in the same episode in which he wears his Wiccan costume. In the space of a few episodes, Billy would discover these powers instinctively, living up to his mother’s comment that he and Tommy were “Born for this” before she tasked them with handling a military threat. Unlike his brother’s singular ability of super speed, however, Wiccan boasts a litany of powers that instantly make him one of the MCU’s most powerful magic users due to their diversity.
In addition to his collection of magic-based powers, Billy also shares a unique ability with his brother. In their second appearance as babies, Billy and Tommy rapidly age twice: first from newborns to young children as Wanda desperately seeks a way to make them stop crying and again when trying to prove to Vision that they are old enough to own a dog. This unusual ability can seemingly be deployed at will, though it is unlikely that rapid aging will be a part of Wiccan’s core power set outside the hex – if he still lives.
Is Wiccan Still Alive In The MCU?
Wiccan Appeared Again In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
Billy and Tommy were dispelled along with the hex and Vision at the end of WandaVision. Still, just a few moments later, Wanda is seen reading the Darkhold when Billy’s disembodied voice can be heard calling out to her. This immediately undercut the notion that Billy Maximoff was dead and gone in the MCU before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would feature variants of Billy and Tommy in Earth-838.
The entire premise of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hinges on Wanda’s certainty that Billy – or at least a variant of him – still lives within the MCU. Billy Maximoff seemingly no longer exists in Earth-616, and now that Wanda is dead, a second hex can’t materialize another version of the character introduced in WandaVision. On the other hand, some very convincing theories suggest that Wiccan has somehow returned nonetheless and is currently starring alongside Agatha in Agatha All Along.
Agatha All Along’s Wiccan Theories Explained
The Prevailing Theory Is That Joe Locke’s Teen Is The MCU’s Wiccan
Agatha All Along has debuted Joe Locke’s “Teen,” a character whose moniker derives from the fact that a magical sigil has been placed upon him to prevent him from divulging personal information. This has given rise to multiple theories surrounding the truth of his identity, with the most widely held theory being that Joe Locke is portraying Billy Kaplan, AKA Wiccan. Should this follow a similar route to Wiccan’s story in Marvel Comics, then Kaplan/Teen may host the soul of Billy Maximoff as he was reincarnated into this body.
Several pieces of evidence hint at this being the case. Firstly, Teen has already proven himself to be at least somewhat proficient with magic, as he was the one to release Agatha from Wanda’s hex. Trailer footage also shows Teen using blue magic reminiscent of Wiccan’s magic in Marvel Comics, and Billy Maximoff’s in WandaVision. Furthermore, both Teen and Wiccan are gay and in relationships – though whether Teen’s boyfriend turns out to be an adaptation of Hulkling from Marvel Comics remains to be seen.
Wiccan’s Marvel Comics Origin & Powers Explained
Wiccan Is Both Billy Kaplan And Billy Maximoff
So far, the MCU is treading a very similar path to Wiccan’s Marvel Comics origins. Confirmation that Mephisto is canon in the MCU feeds into this, as Billy Maximoff was originally incarnated out of a piece of Mephisto’s soul by Wanda Maximoff. Both he and his brother Tommy ostensibly died after Mephisto re-absorbed these fragments. He would later be retro-reincarnated into the body of Billy Kaplan, however, which is the identity he maintains even after learning the truth of his origins as the son of Wanda and Vision and twin of Tommy, who was reincarnated into Tommy Shepherd.
Wiccan is a founding member of the Young Avengers alongside Nathaniel Richards/Iron Lad, Eli Bradley/Patriot, and Teddy Altman/Hulkling, who is also Billy’s boyfriend. Kate Bishop and Cassie Lang would join the new team later, while Tommy Shepherd/Speed would join later still. A version of Vision that resembles the MCU’s White Vision insofar as he is built from the remnants of the original Vision’s body and memories is also part of the team.
Wiccan boasts an impressive array of powers in Marvel Comics reminiscent of his mother’s. These include reality manipulation, elemental manipulation, teleportation, telekinesis, telepathy, flight, healing, clairvoyance, and the ability to peer into alternate universes. Suffice it to say, should the MCU’s Wiccan emulate these abilities, then he will be a tour de force worthy of Scarlet Witch‘s powerful legacy within the MCU.
