Seattle’s Future WR1? A Rising Draft Prospect Might Replace A Fan Favorite!

The Seattle Seahawks may have to replace one of their longtime contributors this offseason in wide receiver Tyler Lockett, who is expected to be a cap casualty.

A 2015 third-round pick of the Seahawks, Lockett is a franchise great who has been a staple on the offense for several years. Unfortunately, the time has come for Seattle to part with him, as he’s set to turn 33, has a massive cap hit in 2025 and he is now third in the pecking order behind DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Seahawks predicted to replace Tyler Lockett with ascending NFL Draft prospect image

Cutting Lockett would leave the Seahawks with a void at wide receiver, something they could remedy in the 2025 NFL Draft. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com has Seattle doing just that by drafting Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden with the No. 18 overall pick in the first round.

“With Tyler Lockett as a potential cap casualty and rumors swirling that DK Metcalf could be traded, Golden becomes an easier fit here,” he wrote.

Once thought to be a Day 2 pick, Golden figures to be rocketing up draft boards after his impressive showing at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. His highlights included running the fastest 40-yard dash time among wideouts.

Golden never put up gaudy numbers in college, but he did save his best for last, with the Texas product posting career-highs in receiving yards (987) and touchdowns (nine) in his final collegiate season.

Golden can check multiple boxes. He can line up anywhere on the formation and is effective at every level of the field, including as a deep threat, which makes him a fantastic complement to Metcalf and JSN.

It would be tough to see Lockett playing elsewhere in 2025, but if the Seahawks hit on Golden in the first round, it would most definitely help soften the blow.
