Punishment Drops! Donovan Mitchell Suspended For LOTS OF Games Ahead – Is an Internal Fine Coming Too?

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in a thrilling 129-123 victory on Sunday night, extending their winning streak and solidifying their position among the league’s top teams. The win improved Cleveland to an Eastern Conference-best 47-10 record, while the Grizzlies dropped to 37-20 on the season.

Donovan Mitchell played a pivotal role in the victory, leading all scorers with 33 points while adding two rebounds and six assists. However, his participation extended beyond just scoring.

During the first half, Mitchell made contact with Grizzlies forward Jaylen Wells and fell to the ground in what many speculated to be an exaggerated flop. Upon review, the NBA determined that Mitchell’s actions warranted disciplinary action.

In an official statement released Tuesday, the league announced its decision:

“CLE’s Donovan Mitchell was assessed a postgame Flopping fine of $2,000 upon league office review for [play] on Feb. 23 vs. MEM,” NBA Official shared on X.

Given Mitchell’s $35.4 million salary this season (via Spotrac), the fine is little more than a minor inconvenience for the six-time All-Star.

But that wasn’t the only notable moment involving Mitchell on the night. He also found himself in an altercation with Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane, leading to a scuffle that required intervention from players and coaching staff.

The Grizzlies, now 2-3 in their last five games, will look to bounce back before their rematch against the Cavaliers on March 14.

Both teams will resume action on Tuesday night: the Grizzlies’ next test comes against a struggling Phoenix Suns team, while the Cavaliers will look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they face the Orlando Magic.
