A trade to the Warriors ended Jimmy Butler’s dramatic saga with the Heat, but the six-time All-Star still has unresolved issues in Miami.
Less than a month into his time in Golden State, Butler is being sued by a South Florida-based company over damages and unpaid rent for a property he was leasing during his time with the Heat.
Here is everything to know about the legal battle Butler is facing.
Jimmy Butler lawsuit, explained
In August 2022, Butler entered a two-year lease with Five Star Marketing and Promotions, Inc., for a luxury home in Miami Beach. After the lease agreement expired, Butler continued to live in the home as a holdover tenant, which is a renter who stays at a property after a lease expires.
The lawsuit cites the lease agreement, which stated: “After the expiration of this lease without the written permission of the landlord, the amount of rent due during such hold over period shall be double the rent specified.”
Based on those terms, Butler owed $130,000 per month to Five Star for staying at the property, rent the company claims Butler has not paid.
Five Star’s lawsuit also alleges Butler caused damages to the property, calling it a state of “complete disrepair due to misuse, neglect and waste.” The suit also alleges that Butler’s staff kept the company from performing maintenance and repairs on the property by changing the locks and not providing Five Star with new keys.
The listed damages include an unmaintained pool “overgrown with algae and other debris” and also in need of new pumps. The company alleges that its inability to maintain the home’s air conditioning led to a significant leak in the ceiling, hardwood floor damage and mold growth.
In total, the suit claims over $125,000 in property damages and claims Butler left the home and refused to pay for damages after the company sent a letter demanding payment.
Neither Butler nor his representation have commented on the situation.
