If you’re not caught up on the first four action-packed seasons, Outer Banks follows a group of teenagers from Kildare Island, North Carolina, as they search for hidden treasure. The group includes John B. Routledge (Chase Stokes), Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey), Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss), and JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) — all part of the working-class crew known as the “Pogues,” hailing from the area called The Cut. John B eventually falls in love with Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), a “Kook” from the wealthy neighborhood of Figure Eight.
Each season has seen the teens become entangled in increasingly dangerous conspiracies involving lost treasure, with season 4 focusing on the legendary riches of the infamous pirate Blackbeard — their biggest quest yet.
When Will Outer Banks Season 5 Be Released?
As of now, Netflix has not announced an official release date for season 5 of Outer Banks. It’s also unclear whether it will follow the split-season release format like season 4, which was released in two parts on October 10 and November 7, 2024. This approach mirrors other Netflix hits like Emily in Paris, Bridgerton, Stranger Things, and You.
As of March 10, production on the new season had not been confirmed, so we’re still waiting on a date. But rest assured — season 5 is happening. It’s just a matter of when.
Just before the second part of season 4 premiered, series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke officially announced the renewal of Outer Banks for a fifth season via the show’s social media accounts.
“With a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us and turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago,” the creators wrote.
However, the announcement also confirmed that season 5 will be the show’s final chapter. “And we think it will be our best yet,” they added. “We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.” So, before we embark on one last adventure with John B, JJ, and the rest of the gold-hunting Pogues, here’s everything we know so far about Outer Banks season 5.

Netflix hasn’t revealed the official cast list for season 5, but fans can expect most of the core characters from past seasons — both Pogues and Kooks — to return.

However, one key member of the Pogues is unlikely to return. In the season 4 finale, JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) was fatally stabbed by his father, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), during the group’s time in Morocco.
According to Tudum, the show’s creators had always intended for JJ’s character to eventually meet a tragic end. “It was a really hard decision because he’s such a great part of the ensemble,” said Josh Pate. “It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season. We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent. JJ’s death was a hard but necessary piece of the architecture for the story, and we plan on honoring that as much as we can because we love the character as much as the fans do. And Rudy’s a great friend of ours.”

While no specific plot details have been released, the creators have promised an “epic fifth and final season.” As of the latest updates, the writers are actively working on the scripts.
Shannon Burke shared that the treasure hunt centered around the Blue Crown will continue to drive the story all the way to the series finale.
Co-creator Josh Pate also previously revealed to Tudum: “We’ve always known from the beginning what the last scene would be, if we would be lucky enough to get it that far.” Now that we’re getting that final season, fans are eager to find out how it all ends.
